A Cup Of Trembling & A Burdensome Stone

“Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah [and] against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. In that day, saith the LORD, I will smite every horse with astonishment, and his rider with madness: and I will open mine eyes upon the house of Judah, and will smite every horse of the people with blindness. And the governors of Judah shall say in their heart, The inhabitants of Jerusalem [shall be] my strength in the LORD of hosts their God. In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, [even] in Jerusalem” Zechariah 12:2-6.

Before entering into an exposition of the above text it’s important to understand that “The New Testament teaches that the church is now “the Israel of God.” Gal. 6: 16, etc. But, while there is a change in the chosen people of God-the change from national to spiritual Israel -there is no change made in the language describing “Israel.” The church inherits the phraseology of national Israel: the same words and designations refer to both-to national Israel in regard to the past, and to spiritual Israel from the time of the rejection of the Jewish nation. The prophecies and blessings which at one time referred to national Israel now refer to spiritual Israel ”..[Certainty of the Third Angels Message pg 90].

“The literal of the past –of Israel’s literal kingdom-and the literal things of the future kingdom of glory have their spiritual application in this dispensation of the Holy Spirit”. .. “the Israel of God today, the representatives of heaven that make up the true church of Christ” {Prophets and Kings pg 74.2}.The true church of Christ is the Israel of today. When Zechariah talks of Jerusalem being in siege, by the prophetic eye he sees when the “true church of Christ” shall be encompassed round about by the nations for the sole purpose of destroying the ‘true church of Christ” and the deliverance from that time of trouble.. “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation [even] to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book”. . Daniel 12:1

Siege both against Jerusalem and against Judah ?
Jerusalem becomes a cup of trembling to “all the people”, because they [the people] are in siege both against Jerusalem and against Judah .

At this time [when the people shall burden themselves with Jerusalem], Jerusalem shall also be a “burdensome stone for all people” and “all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces”, for “all the people of the earth are gathered together against it”. It’s at this Time that Jerusalem’s prayer shall be “Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man: preserve me from the violent man; Which imagine mischiefs in [their] heart; continually are they gathered together [for] war. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison [is] under their lips. Selah.Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from the violent man; who have purposed to overthrow my goings. The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords; they have spread a net by the wayside; they have set gins for me. Selah”. Psalms 140:1-5

The time when the people shall burden themselves with Jerusalem, is the time Jeremiah foresaw when he wrote …, “Alas! for that day [is] great, so that none [is] like it: it [is] even the time of Jacob’s trouble; but he shall be saved out of it” Jeremiah 30:7.

“When Christ shall cease His work as mediator in man’s behalf, then this time of trouble will begin. Then the case of every soul will have been decided, and there will be no atoning blood to cleanse from sin”. . . . Then the restraining Spirit of God is withdrawn from the earth. As Jacob was threatened with death by his angry brother, so the people of God will be in peril from the wicked who are seeking to destroy them. And as the patriarch wrestled all night for deliverance from the hand of Esau, so the righteous will cry to God day and night for deliverance from the enemies that surround them. . . . {Conflict and Courage pg 68}

“When the people of God will be in peril from the wicked who are seeking to destroy them”, is the time Zechariah also speaks of when he says “I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah [and] against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it”.

“I saw that the four angels would hold the four winds until Jesus’ work was done in the sanctuary, and then will come the seven last plagues. These plagues enraged the wicked against the righteous; they thought that we had brought the judgments of God upon them, and that if they could rid the earth of us, the plagues would then be stayed. A decree went forth to slay the saints, which caused them to cry day and night for deliverance. This was the time of Jacob’s trouble. [See Genesis 32.] Then all the saints cried out with anguish of spirit, and were delivered by the voice of God. The one hundred and forty-four thousand triumphed. Their faces were lighted up with the glory of God”.{Christian Experience and Teachings pg 100.3} .

The events brought forth in the foregoing paragraphs show that it’s “when Christ shall have ceased His work as mediator” and his Spirit fully withdrawn from the wicked, that the people shall burden themselves with Jerusalem and Judah. But as that fateful time draws near “The agencies of evil are combining their forces, and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.[Testimonies, vol. 9, p 11.] …“ …The spirit of war is stirring the nations from one end of the earth to the other.—[Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 17]. (1909) .

Desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword.
“Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, [and] wrung [them] out.[There is] none to guide her among all the sons [whom] she hath brought forth; neither [is there any] that taketh her by the hand of all the sons [that] she hath brought up. These two [things] are come unto thee; who shall be sorry for thee? desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword: by whom shall I comfort thee? Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God. Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:” Isaiah 51:17-21.

Isaiah shows Jerusalem drunk at “the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury”; from the above cited text it’s plain that drinking at the “cup of his fury” is the same as being drunk with “the dregs of the cup of trembling”. Thus when Zechariah says the Lord will make “ Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people roundabout” he alludes that by the reason of the people gathering round about Jerusalem with the purpose of destroying it ,then the “fury of the Lord” shall be poured upon the nations. Drinking of the “cup of trembling” is being under the “rebuke of the Lord”, drinking at the “cup of his fury”. With the Rebuke of the Lord comes “desolation, and destruction, and the famine, and the sword”,

“The Protestant world today see in the little company keeping the Sabbath a Mordecai in the gate. His character and conduct, expressing reverence for the law of God, are a constant rebuke to those who have cast off the fear of the Lord, and are trampling upon His Sabbath; the unwelcome intruder must by some means be put out of the way. Satan will excite indignation against the humble minority who conscientiously refuse to accept popular customs and traditions. Men of position and reputation will join with the lawless and the vile to take counsel against the people of God. Wealth, genius, education, will combine to cover them with contempt. Persecuting rulers, ministers, and church members will conspire against them. With voice and pen, by boasts, threats, and ridicule, they will seek to overthrow their faith. By false representations and angry appeals, they will stir up the passions of the people. Not having a “Thus saith the Scriptures” to bring against the advocates of the Bible Sabbath, they will resort to oppressive enactments to supply the lack. To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand for a Sunday law. . . . On this battlefield comes the last great conflict of the controversy between truth and error.—[Testimonies, vol. 5, pp. 450, 451].

Spiritual Israel, the true Church of Christ, has spiritual enemies, “the lawless and the vile”,.. “those who have cast off the fear of the Lord”. ..“With the transition from literal to spiritual Israel, in the prophecies of Daniel, we also pass from literal to spiritual Rome, and from literal to spiritual Babylon. This transition from the national to the spiritual enemies in “Israel” occurs because God’s chosen people have changed from, national to spiritual Israel. When the church became “the Israel of God,” everything in the Scriptures pertaining to Israel and his enemies automatically passed from the national and local to the spiritual and world-wide” ”..[Certainty of the Third Angels Message pg 90]…. Desolation and destruction shall be the fate of the nations [the the lawless and the vile] that shall have entered into a confederacy to destroy Gods people. This desolation is the cup of trembling. Its they that shall be found with the “seal of God” that shall escape the cup of trembling, the desolations determined upon the wicked.

“When this time of trouble comes, every case is decided; there is no longer probation, no longer mercy for the impenitent. The seal of the living God is upon His people. This small remnant, unable to defend themselves in the deadly conflict with the powers of earth that are marshaled by the dragon host, make God their defense. The decree has been passed by the highest earthly authority that they shall worship the beast and receive his mark under pain of persecution and death. May God help His people now, for what can they then do in such a fearful conflict without His assistance! Courage, fortitude, faith, and implicit trust in God’s power to save, do not come in a moment. These heavenly graces are acquired by the experience of years. By a life of holy endeavor and firm adherence to the right, the children of God were sealing their destiny. Beset with temptations without number, they knew they must resist firmly or be conquered. They felt that they had a great work to do, and at any hour they might be called to lay off their armor; and should they come to the close of life with their work undone, it would be an eternal loss. They eagerly accepted the light from Heaven, as did the first disciples from the lips of Jesus. When those early Christians were exiled to mountains and deserts, when left in dungeons to die with hunger, cold, and torture, when martyrdom seemed the only way out of their distress, they rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer for Christ, who was crucified for them. Their worthy example will be a comfort and encouragement to the people of God who will be brought into the time of trouble such as never was”. {Christian Experience and Teachings pg 187- 188.}

Nations are Mad
“Babylon [hath been] a golden cup in the LORD’S hand, that made all the earth drunken: the nations have drunken of her wine; therefore the nations are mad”. Jeremiah 51:7.

The earth [the people], that drink the false doctrines of the apostate church [her wine], shall be maddened by it and will seek to destroy they that have the seal of God. By reason of drinking the wine of Babylon shall the nations drink of the “cup of trembling”, Gods fury. Time and again the prophets have warned of this time of trouble or rather the “day of the Lord”, when the nations shall drink of the wrath of God.

… “Zion’s watchmen are directed to “Sound an alarm in my holy mountain; let all the inhabitants of the land tremble; for the day of the Lord cometh, for it is nigh at hand.” Joel 2:1.The people are summoned to hear this alarm as follows: “Come near, ye nations, to hear; and hearken, ye people; let the earth hear, and all that is therein; the world, and all things that come forth of it. For the indignation of the Lord is upon all nations; and his fury upon all their armies; he hath utterly destroyed them, he hath delivered them to the slaughter.” Isa. 34:1, 2. This day is spoken of by all the prophets. Says one, “The great day of the Lord is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the Lord: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, a day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men because they have sinned against the Lord; and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the Lord’s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy; for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.” Zeph. 1:14-18. Again, in the same book, it is said: “My determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger; for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.” .

Another prophet says: “Howl ye, for the day of the Lord is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.” “Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate; and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.” Isa. 13:6, 9. And again, the same prophet says, “Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste.” “The land shall be utterly emptied and utterly spoiled; for the Lord hath spoken this word.” Chap. 24:1, 3. {Refutation of the Doctrine Called the Age to come pg 26.2}

Jeremiah gives an account of this destruction more full and emphatic than those already quoted. “Thus saith the Lord God of Israel unto me: Take the wine cup of this fury at my hand, and cause all the nations, to whom I send thee, to drink it. And they shall drink, and be moved, and be mad, because of the sword that I will send among them. Then took I the cup at the Lord’s hand, and made all the nations to drink, unto whom the Lord had sent me; to wit, Jerusalem, and the cities of Judah, and the kings thereof, and the princes thereof, to make them a desolation, an astonishment, an hissing, and a curse; as it is this day; Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and his servants, and his princes, and all his people; and all the mingled people, and all the kings of the land of Uz, and all the kings of the land of the Philistines, and Ashkelon, and Azzah, and Ekron, and the remnant of Ashdod, Edom, and Moab, and the children of Ammon, and all the kings of Tyrus, and all the kings of Zidon, and the kings of the isles which are beyond the sea, Dedan, and Tema, and Buz, and all that are in the utmost corners, and all the kings of Arabia, and all the kings of the mingled people that dwell in the desert, and all the kings of Zimri, and all the kings of Elam, and all the kings of the Medes, and all the kings of the north, far and near, one with another, and all the kingdoms of the world, which are upon the face of the earth: and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them. Therefore, thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and fall, and rise no more, because of the sword which I will send among you. And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at thy hand to drink, then shalt thou say unto them, Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Ye shall certainly drink. For lo, I begin to bring evil on the city which is called by my name, and should ye be utterly unpunished? Ye shall not be unpunished; for I will call for a sword upon all the inhabitants of the earth, saith the Lord of hosts. Therefore prophesy thou against them all these words, and say unto them, The Lord shall roar from on high, and utter his voice from his holy habitation; he shall mightily roar upon his habitation; he shall give a shout, as they that tread the grapes, against all the inhabitants of the earth. A noise shall come even to the ends of the earth; for the Lord hath a controversy with the nations, he will plead with all flesh: he will give them that are wicked to the sword, saith the Lord. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Behold, evil shall go forth from nation to nation, and a great whirlwind shall be raised up from the coasts of the earth. And the slain of the Lord shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.” Jer. 25:15-33.

When destruction and desolation shall be upon the wicked nations, to the righteous “The precious Saviour will send help just when we need it. The way to heaven is consecrated by His footprints. Every thorn that wounds our feet has wounded His. Every cross that we are called to bear He has borne before us. The Lord permits conflicts, to prepare the soul for peace. The time of trouble is a fearful ordeal for God’s people; but it is the time for every true believer to look up, and by faith he may see the bow of promise encircling him. “The redeemed of the Lord shall return, and come with singing unto Zion; and everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. I, even I, am He that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as grass; and forgettest the Lord thy Maker; . . . and hast feared continually every day because of the fury of the oppressor, as if he were ready to destroy? and where is the fury of the oppressor? The captive exile hasteneth that he may be loosed, and that he should not die in the pit, nor that his bread should fail. But I am the Lord thy God, that divided the sea, whose waves roared: The Lord of hosts is His name. And I have put My words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of Mine hand.” Isaiah 51:11-16. “Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine: Thus saith thy Lord the Lord, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of His people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of My fury; thou shalt no more drink it again: but I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over.” Verses 21-23. “The eye of God, looking down the ages, was fixed upon the crisis which His people are to meet, when earthly powers shall be arrayed against them. Like the captive exile, they will be in fear of death by starvation or by violence. But the Holy One who divided the Red Sea before Israel, will manifest His mighty power and turn their captivity. “They shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.” Malachi 3:17. If the blood of Christ’s faithful witnesses were shed at this time, it would not, like the blood of the martyrs, be as seed sown to yield a harvest for God. Their fidelity would not be a testimony to convince others of the truth; for the obdurate heart has beaten back the waves of mercy until they return no more. If the righteous were now left to fall a prey to their enemies, it would be a triumph for the prince of darkness. Says the psalmist: “In the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion: in the secret of His tabernacle shall He hide me.” Psalm 27:5. Christ has spoken: “Come, My people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast. For, behold, the Lord cometh out of His place to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity.” Isaiah 26:20, 21. Glorious will be the deliverance of those who have patiently waited for His coming and whose names are written in the book of life. {Great Controversy pg 633- 634}

At the time of trouble the righteous will have “bow of promise encircling” them, this bow of promise when God looks at he remembers his everlasting covenant. At this time,the righteous will be rewarded the promise of …Isaiah 55:3 “Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, [even] the sure mercies of David”. At the time of trouble the “sure mercies of David” will be upon spiritual Jerusalem,.. while the nations will burden themselves with Jerusalem ,the nations shall be broken into pieces,for at that time they that shall not be under the “bow of promise” ,then upon them shall be fullfiled …Isaiah 24:1-6..“Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him. The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word. The earth mourneth [and] fadeth away, the world languisheth [and] fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left”.
“By faith let us look upon the rainbow round about the throne, the cloud of sins confessed behind it. The rainbow of promise is an assurance to every humble, contrite, believing soul, that his life is one with Christ, and that Christ is one with God. The wrath of God will not fall upon one soul that seeks refuge in Him. God Himself has declared, “When I see the blood, I will pass over you.” “The bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that I may remember the everlasting covenant” (Exodus 12:13; Genesis 9:16). {Gods Amazing Grace pg 70.5}

Burdensome stone for all people
Zechariah says “Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces”… “in the second chapter of Daniel’s prophecy, the same thing is set before us. The prophet, in the interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream, foretold the rise and fall of the great universal empires that should succeed the kingdom of Babylon, with the division of Rome, the last one, into smaller kingdoms, as represented by the iron and clay of the feet of the “great image,” and said: “In the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever.” Dan. 2:44. This kingdom was seen in the dream as “a stone cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them in pieces;” and they “became like the chaff of the summer threshing-floors, and the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them; and the stone that smote the image became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth.” Verses 34, 35. {American Sentinel pg 330.5}

Remember … “Christ, as stated by the prophet Daniel, will receive from the Ancient of days in Heaven, “dominion, and glory, and a kingdom,” he will receive the New Jerusalem, the capital of his kingdom, “prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.” [Daniel 7:14; Revelation 21:2.] Having received the kingdom, he will come in his glory, as King of kings, and Lord of lords, for the redemption of his people, who are to “sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob,” at his table in his kingdom, [Matthew 8:11; Luke 22:30.] to partake of the marriage supper of the Lamb. {Great Controversy 1888 pg 426.2}….Christ receiving the Kingdom and coming in his glory is the “setting up of a kingdom that shall never be destroyed” spoken of in Daniel 2. “This kingdom was seen in the dream as “a stone cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them in pieces;”.Those [the people] that are broken in pieces at the setting up of this kingdom are they that never made it in the “marriage supper of the lamb” for they were not worthy… “In the parable of Matthew 22 the same figure of the marriage is introduced, and the investigative Judgment is clearly represented as taking place before the marriage. Previous to the wedding the king comes in to see the guests, [Matthew 22:11.]—to see if all are attired in the wedding garment, the spotless robe of character washed and made white in the blood of the Lamb. [Revelation 7:14.] He who is found wanting is cast out, but all who upon examination are seen to have the wedding garment on, are accepted of God, and accounted worthy of a share in his kingdom and a seat upon his throne.”.. {Great Controversy 1888 pg 428.1}

In the prophecy of Daniel 2 the stone kingdom is set up in the days of “clay mixed with iron”… “The clay mixed with iron also denoted the union of church and state. This combination is peculiar to the latter part of the world’s history, to the feet and toes of the image. Religion was the basis of government in the heathen nations; there could be no separation of the church and the state. When apostate Christianity united with the state, each remained in a sense distinct as the miry clay is separate from iron. This union continues until the stone smites the image upon the feet. The very fact that the “stone was cut out of the mountain without hands,” shows that the last kingdoms on earth will not be overthrown by any earthly power, but that the God of heaven will bring upon them final destruction by giving them to the burning flames”

Jerusalem becomes a burdensome stone to the nations by reason of the nations “union of church and state” ,because the “union of church and state” end result has always been persecution of Gods people. Note that this deadly “union [of church and state] continues until the stone smites the image upon the feet” and breaks the nations into pieces.

“The mingling of church craft and state craft is represented by the iron and the clay. This union is weakening all the power of the churches. This investing the church with the power of the state will bring evil results. Men have almost passed the point of God’s forbearance. They have invested their strength in politics, and have united with the papacy. But the time will come when God will punish those who have made void His law, and their evil work will recoil upon themselves”{Volume 1 Manuscript Releases pg 51.1}

So when Zechariah says “Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces” he sees the same fatefull event that Daniel saw when he said “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, [but] it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream [is] certain, and the interpretation thereof sure”. Daniel 2:44-45

Christ the Tried Stone

“Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder”.. Mathew 21:42-44.

“In the parable of the vineyard, after Christ had portrayed before the priests their crowning act of wickedness, He put to them the question, “When the Lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?” The priests had been following the narrative with deep interest, and without considering the relation of the subject to themselves they joined with the people in answering, “He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out His vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render Him the fruits in their seasons.”….. “ Unwittingly they had pronounced their own doom. Jesus looked upon them, and under His searching gaze they knew that He read the secrets of their hearts. His divinity flashed out before them with unmistakable power. They saw in the husbandmen a picture of themselves, and they involuntarily exclaimed, “God forbid!” Solemnly and regretfully Christ asked, “Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner; this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes? Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof. And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.”…… “ Christ would have averted the doom of the Jewish nation if the people had received Him. But envy and jealousy made them implacable. They determined that they would not receive Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah. They rejected the Light of the world, and thenceforth their lives were surrounded with darkness as the darkness of midnight. The doom foretold came upon the Jewish nation. Their own fierce passions, uncontrolled, wrought their ruin. In their blind rage they destroyed one another. Their rebellious, stubborn pride brought upon them the wrath of their Roman conquerors. Jerusalem was destroyed, the temple laid in ruins, and its site plowed like a field. The children of Judah perished by the most horrible forms of death. Millions were sold, to serve as bondmen in heathen lands. As a people the Jews had failed of fulfilling God’s purpose, and the vineyard was taken from them. The privileges they had abused, the work they had slighted, was entrusted to others” .. {Christ Object Lessons pg 294-296}

The “Saviour’s prophecy concerning the visitation of judgments upon Jerusalem” is typified by “but on whomsoever it shall fall—, it will grind him to powder”. The language used by Christ here is similar to Daniels language “Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet [that were] of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces. Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold, broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of the summer threshingfloors; and the wind carried them away, that no place was found for them” .

“The Saviour’s prophecy concerning the visitation of judgments upon Jerusalem is to have another fulfillment, of which that terrible desolation was but a faint shadow. In the fate of the chosen city we may behold the doom of a world that has rejected God’s mercy and trampled upon His law. Dark are the records of human misery that earth has witnessed during its long centuries of crime. The heart sickens, and the mind grows faint in contemplation. Terrible have been the results of rejecting the authority of Heaven. But a scene yet darker is presented in the revelations of the future. The records of the past,–the long procession of tumults, conflicts, and revolutions, the “battle of the warrior . . . with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood” (Isaiah 9:5),–what are these, in contrast with the terrors of that day when the restraining Spirit of God shall be wholly withdrawn from the wicked, no longer to hold in check the outburst of human passion and satanic wrath! The world will then behold, as never before, the results of Satan’s rule”. {Great Controversy pg 36.2}

This “doom of a world that has rejected God’s mercy and trampled upon His law” is the doom that Zechariah sees when he says and Jerusalem shall become burdensome stone. Thus far it should be apparent to the understanding of the reader that when “Jerusalem becomes a cup of trembling to “all the people” and “Jerusalem shall also be a “burdensome stone for all people” Zacharias prophecy covers a series of events including the pouring of the seven last plagues upto the setting up of Christ’s kingdom of glory.

Eating and Drinking Damnation
1 Corinthians 11:24-29 “And when he had given thanks, he brake [it], and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also [he took] the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink [it], in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do show the Lord’s death till he come. Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink [this] cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body”

“The Passover was ordained as a commemoration of the deliverance of Israel from Egyptian bondage. God had directed that, year by year, as the children should ask the meaning of this ordinance, the history should be repeated. Thus the wonderful deliverance was to be kept fresh in the minds of all. The ordinance of the Lord’s Supper was given to commemorate the great deliverance wrought out as the result of the death of Christ. Till He shall come the second time in power and glory, this ordinance is to be celebrated. It is the means by which His great work for us is to be kept fresh in our minds”. {Counsels for the Church pg 298.3}.

“Whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.” He will be in the condition of the men who crucified Christ, not seeing in Him the Lord of glory. What does he who eats unworthily bring upon himself? The answer follows: “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself.” And how is it that one eats and drinks unworthily? By “not discerning the Lord’s body.” How can one discern the Lord’s body, and thus avoid eating and drinking unworthily?–By faith; “He that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth not of faith; for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” And how can one eat by faith?–Easily enough; he has only to believe the words of Christ: “This is My body.” It is faith that gives discernment. If we believe the words of Scripture, we shall have no difficulty in seeing the body of Christ, who is the power of God, in the gifts which He bestows on us to keep us in life”. {The Everlasting Covenant pg 255.2}

From this Model of the Lords supper we find an element of faith. Remember “the ordinance of the Lord’s Supper was given to commemorate the great deliverance wrought out as the result of the death of Christ”. A lack of faith in the death of Christ makes us unworthy by reason of harboring doubts; doubts will lead us to the snare of dead works. They that lack faith, how shall they believe in the doctrine of “Justification by faith”, for its only they that drink worthily, that shall be purged from dead works See.. Hebrews 9:14 “How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

Sister White says “Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of justification by faith is the third angel’s message, and I have answered, “It is the third angel’s message in verity.”– Review and Herald, April 1, 1890.

If “justification by faith … is the third angel’s message in verity” then they that lack faith, the “faith of Jesus” shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God as warned in the third angel’s message… “And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive [his] mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb”:… This “wrath of God” is what we saw to be the “cup of trembling”, this is the damnation of they that drink unworthily.

Those that don’t partake worthily by reason of lack of faith are they that drink from the cup of devils… See 1Corinthians 10:16-21.“The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? For we [being] many are one bread, [and] one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? But I [say], that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils”

Again from this model of the Lords supper “the wonderful deliverance was to be kept fresh in the minds of all”… Whenever we partake from the “cup of the devils” by drinking unworthily, then we become unmindful of the Rock that begat us …See the “type” in Deuteronomy 32:16-25 “They provoked him to jealousy with strange [gods], with abominations provoked they him to anger.They sacrificed unto devils, not to God; to gods whom they knew not, to new [gods that] came newly up, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock [that] begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast forgotten God that formed thee. And when the LORD saw [it], he abhorred [them], because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters. And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end [shall be]: for they [are] a very froward generation, children in whom [is] no faith.They have moved me to jealousy with [that which is] not God; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with [those which are] not a people; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them. [They shall be] burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling [also] with the man of gray hairs”.

The other reason why Jerusalem shall be a cup of trembling to the nations is because the nations shall have rejected the “chief corner stone” by not having faith in his saving merits, the saving merits of the Lord of Jerusalem.The nations will then enter into “fellowship with devils” See Revelation 18:2-3 “ And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird. For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies”. …“A terrible condition of the religious world is here described. With every rejection of truth the minds of the people will become darker, their hearts more stubborn, until they are entrenched in an infidel hardihood. In defiance of the warnings which God has given, they will continue to trample upon one of the precepts of the Decalogue, until they are led to persecute those who hold it sacred. Christ is set at nought in the contempt placed upon His word and His people. As the teachings of spiritualism are accepted by the churches, the restraint imposed upon the carnal heart is removed, and the profession of religion will become a cloak to conceal the basest iniquity. A belief in spiritual manifestations opens the door to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and thus the influence of evil angels will be felt in the churches.Of Babylon, at the time brought to view in this prophecy, it is declared: “Her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.” Revelation 18:5. She has filled up the measure of her guilt, and destruction is about to fall upon her. But God still has a people in Babylon; and before the visitation of His judgments these faithful ones must be called out, that they partake not of her sins and “receive not of her plagues.” Hence the movement symbolized by the angel coming down from heaven, lightening the earth with his glory and crying mightily with a strong voice, announcing the sins of Babylon. In connection with his message the call is heard: “Come out of her, My people.” These announcements, uniting with the third angel’s message, constitute the final warning to be given to the inhabitants of the earth”. {Great Controversy pg 603- 604}

City of truth against bloody city
Zechariah 8:3 “Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain”.

Zechariah says the “city of truth” is “the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain” this reminds us of the stone kingdom of Daniel 2 which became a great mountain and established forever..

Jerusalem [True church of God] becomes “a cup of trembling unto all the people round about” and “a burdensome stone” to the nations– because of its faith in the “chief corner stone”, who then dwells amongst them thus making them a city of truth.

On the other hand the wrath of God as in the third angels message is threatened to the nations that shall not have faith in the Lord of Jerusalem [the city of truth] .The people that shall not be a city of truth shall become a bloody city and a city of lies …See Nahum 3:1 “Woe to the bloody city! it [is] all full of lies [and] robbery; the prey departeth not”;….

How do the people upon whom the wrath of God shall fall become a bloody city? It’s when they give heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils…See Isaiah 1:21-25 “How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water: Thy princes [are] rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the mighty One of Israel, Ah, I will ease me of mine adversaries, and avenge me of mine enemies:And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin:And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called, The city of righteousness, the faithful city. Zion shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness. And the destruction of the transgressors and of the sinners [shall be] together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed”

Those that forsake the graces of the “chief cornerstone” will always be given to lies and a murderous spirit …See John 8:40-17 “But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, [even] God. Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.Why do ye not understand my speech? [even] because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.And because I tell [you] the truth, ye believe me not.Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me? He that is of God heareth God’s words: ye therefore hear [them] not, because ye are not of God”.

Isaiah compares “a bloody city” to a harlot; this is because of her spiritual fornication. Just like the harlot of Revelation 17.A bloody city is full of abominations,, See Ezekiel 22:2 “Now, thou son of man, wilt thou judge, wilt thou judge the bloody city? yea, thou shalt show her all her abominations”. .. In the cup of abominations of a bloody city is the disregard for the Sabbath..as Ezekiel continues to furnish us with details in Ezekiel 22:8 “Thou hast despised mine holy things, and hast profaned my Sabbaths”. …. And such a city when the spirit of God shall be fully withdrawn ,,shall drink of the cup of trembling[his indignation] …See Ezekiel 22:24 “Son of man, say unto her, Thou [art] the land that is not cleansed, nor rained upon in the day of indignation” because of lawlessness and wickedness..see Ezekiel. 22:26…“Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they showed [difference] between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them”.

The lawlessness of the people of the nations ,t heir disregard for the Sabbath makes them bloody by seeking to destroy the commandment keepers. But the Lord shall vindicate his people ,,and thus shall the faithful Jerusalem become a “cup of trembling” until it becomes “a burdensome stone” to them [the wicked people].

“Today the enemies of the true church see in the little company keeping the Sabbath commandment, a Mordecai at the gate. The reverence of God’s people for His law is a constant rebuke to those who have cast off the fear of the Lord and are trampling on His Sabbath. . . .Men of position and reputation will join with the lawless and the vile to take counsel against the people of God. Wealth, genius, education, will combine to cover them with contempt. Persecuting rulers, ministers, and church members will conspire against them. …With voice and pen, by boasts, threats, and ridicule, they will seek to overthrow their faith. By false representations and angry appeals, men will stir up the passions of the people. Not having a “Thus saith the Scriptures” to bring against the advocates of the Bible Sabbath, they will resort to oppressive enactments to supply the lack. To secure popularity and patronage, legislators will yield to the demand for Sunday laws. But those who fear God, cannot accept an institution that violates a precept of the Decalogue. On this battlefield will be fought the last great conflict in the controversy between truth and error. And we are not left in doubt as to the issue. Today, as in the days of Esther and Mordecai, the Lord will vindicate His truth and His people”..{Conflict and Courage pg 245.5}.

“Wherefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city, to the pot whose scum [is] therein, and whose scum is not gone out of it! bring it out piece by piece; let no lot fall upon it….Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe to the bloody city! I will even make the pile for fire great. …She hath wearied [herself] with lies, and her great scum went not forth out of her: her scum [shall be] in the fire….In thy filthiness [is] lewdness: because I have purged thee, and thou wast not purged, thou shalt not be purged from thy filthiness any more, till I have caused my fury to rest upon thee. ….I the LORD have spoken [it]: it shall come to pass, and I will do [it]; I will not go back, neither will I spare, neither will I repent; according to thy ways, and according to thy doings, shall they judge thee, saith the Lord GOD”. Ezekiel 24:6,9,12,13,14.
