Ecclesiastes 12:5 Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets:

Introduction

The method of parallel movements

“We mention this method as a caution as well as a recommendation. It is the procedure by which a detailed study of something God’s people did in the past is used to point out lessons for God’s people today. Thus the exodus of Israel from Egypt and their journey to the Promised Land may be compared with the spiritual journey. of the modern church toward the Promised Land. World conditions before the first coming of Christ may be compared with world conditions before the second coming of Christ. Ancient apostasies may be compared with modern apostasies, and so on.There are two very real dangers associated with this method. The first is the making of a too detailed comparison, by which we attempt to show that even the details of an ancient situation are the same as in the modern situation. This is not necessarily true. The second, and closely related danger, is that of using the ancient experience as a basis for predicting the future. If this is done, we should be careful to stay very close to the Scriptures. Thus when Jesus speaks of social conditions that will also be present in the last days, we may teach this with confidence. But we must be cautious about drawing our own conclusions in such matters. We have no reason to believe, for example, that men who are on the earth in the last days will live for hundreds of years like those who were on the earth before the flood”.[ Preach the word pg 45]

The burden of this study is to consider the experiences during the millerites time period and point out lessons for Gods people today. “All the messages given from 1840-1844 are to be made forcible now, for there are many people who have lost their bearings. The messages are to go to all the churches” {Volume 21 Manuscript Releases pg 437.1}.See Jeremiah 6:16 “Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where [is] the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls”. “We have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history. We are now a strong people, if we will put our trust in the Lord; for we are handling the mighty truths of the word of God. We have everything to be thankful for.”–General Conference Bulletin, 1893, p. 24”.

Millerite Movement Experience

“In the year 1840, another remarkable fulfillment of prophecy excited widespread interest. Two years before, Josiah Litch, one of the leading ministers preaching the second advent, published an exposition of Revelation 9, predicting the fall of the Ottoman empire, and specifying not only the year but the very day on which this would take place. According to this exposition, which was purely a matter of calculation on the prophetic periods of Scripture, the Turkish government would surrender its independence on the eleventh day of August, 1840. The prediction was widely published, and thousands watched the course of events with eager interest. At the very time specified, Turkey, through her ambassadors, accepted the protection of the allied powers of Europe, and thus placed herself under the control of Christian nations. The event exactly fulfilled the prediction. When it became known, multitudes were convinced of the correctness of the principles of prophetic interpretation adopted by Miller and his associates, and a wonderful impetus was given to the Advent movement. Men of learning and position united with Miller, both in preaching and publishing his views, and from 1840 to 1844 the work rapidly extended.” {Great Controversy 1888 pg 334.5}

From the millerites experience we see that the fulfillment of the events noted in the Revelation, the ninth chapter excited wide spread interest and “a wonderful impetus was given to the Advent movement. Men of learning and position united with Miller, both in preaching and publishing his views, and from 1840 to 1844 the work rapidly extended”

“The record of the experience through which the people of God passed in the early history of our work must be republished. Many of those who have since come into the truth are ignorant of the way in which the Lord wrought. The experience of William Miller and his associates, of Captain Joseph Bates, and of other pioneers in the Advent message should be kept before our people.”[Publishing Ministry pg 30.1]

The Revelation ,the Ninth Chapter.

Revelation 9:1. And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.”

“To what does the fifth trumpet—the first woe—refer?—To the rise and spread of Mohammedanism.”With surprising unanimity, commentators have agreed in regard to this as referring to the empire of the Saracens, or to the rise and progress of the religion and the empire of Mohammed.”—Albert Barnes”. {The Signs of the Times, Vol. 14 (1888) pg 410.12}

“For an exposition of this trumpet, we shall again draw from the writings of Mr. Keith. This writer truthfully says: “There is scarcely so uniform an agreement among interpreters concerning any other part of the Apocalypse as respecting the application of the fifth and sixth trumpets, or the first and second woes, to the Saracens and Turks. It is so obvious that it can scarcely be misunderstood. Instead of a verse or two designating each, the whole of the ninth chapter of the Revelation in equal portions, is occupied with a description of both.” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 495.2}

We see that the whole of the Revelation, the ninth chapter, in equal portions is occupied with a description of both the Saracens and Turks..

Uriah Smith Continues to say “The Roman empire declined, as it arose, by conquest; but the Saracens and the Turks were the instruments by which a false religion became the scourge of an apostate church; and hence, instead of the fifth and sixth trumpets, like the former, being designated by that name alone, they are called woes” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 495.2}

The religion of the Saracens and the Turks is the false religion. When the millerites diligently studied prophecies to understand the activities [rise,life and fall] of the false religion as prophesied in the Revelation, the ninth chapter, there was an empowerment of the movement when they saw these prophecies fulfilled. From the history of nations we learn that “The history of nations that one after another have occupied their allotted time and place, unconsciously witnessing to the truth of which they themselves knew not the meaning, speaks to us” {Maranatha pg 152.2}.

Revelation 9:2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit

“Like the noxious and even deadly vapors which the winds, particularly from the southwest, diffuse in Arabia, Mohammedanism spread from thence its pestilential influence, – arose as suddenly and spread as widely as smoke arising out of the pit, the smoke of a great furnace. Such is a suitable symbol of the religion of Mohammed, of itself, or as compared with the pure light of the gospel of Jesus. It was not, like the latter, a light from heaven, but a smoke out of the bottomless pit.” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 498.3}

“The Saracens themselves are called locusts by the prophet John, and the doctrine which impelled their actions was as a dense smoke, issuing out of a furnace. The work of these locust-like warriors is described in the eighth plague, sent upon the land of Egypt in the days when Pharaoh refused to let Israel go. “I will bring the locusts into thy coast: and they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, . . . and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field: and they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians.” See {Story of the Seer of Patmos pg 165.1}

From the Revelation, second verse of the ninth chapter, it’s evident that the false religion spoken of is the religion of Mohammed.

Stephen Haskell says “Rev. 9:1-11. Rise of the Mohammedan religion. For about 600 years the Arabs were like locusts without a king. Near the close of the 13th century, Othman founded a government; and July 27, 1299, he entered Nicomedia,-the first attack of the Ottoman government on eastern Rome. Gibbon’s Rome. They were to hurt men five months,-150 years. July 27, 1299, plus 150 years, equals July 27, 1449.” {Bible Hand Book pg 121.3}

Revelation 9: 3. And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.”

See Daniel and Revelation pg 500.2 “A false religion was set up, which, although the scourge of transgressions and idolatry, filled the world with darkness and delusion; and swarms of Saracens, like locusts, overspread the earth, and speedily extended their ravages over the Roman empire from east to west. The hail descended from the frozen shores of the Baltic; the burning mountain fell upon the sea from Africa; and the locusts (the fit symbol of the Arabs) issued from Arabia, their native region. They came as destroyers, propagating a new doctrine, and stirred up to rapine and violence by motives of interest and religion.”

Today as we witness a parallel work of ravages, destruction and violence by motives of interest and religion in the name of terrorism by a false religion,it then also calls for parallel interest in the study of the prophecies so as to bring an awakening among bible students of prophecy, as it was with the experience of the millerites in their time period.

NB: The locusts (the fit symbol of the Arabs)

Revelation 9: 4. And it was commanded from them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

“The Seal of God in Their Foreheads. – the seal of God is the Sabbath of the fourth commandment; and history is not silent upon the fact that there have been observers of the true Sabbath all through the present dispensation. But the question has here arisen with many, Who were those men who at this time had the seal of God in their foreheads, and who thereby became exempt from Mohammedan oppression? Let the reader bear in mind the fact, already alluded to, that there have been those all through this dispensation who have had the seal of God in their foreheads, or have been intelligent observers of the true Sabbath; and let them consider further that what the prophecy asserts is that the attacks of this desolating Turkish power are not directed against them, but against another class. The subject is thus freed from all difficulty; for this is all that the prophecy really asserts. Only one class of persons is directly brought to view in the text; namely, those who have not the seal of God in their foreheads; and the preservation of those who have the seal of God is brought in only by implication. Accordingly, we do not learn from history that any of these were involved in any of the calamities inflicted by the Saracens upon the objects of their hate. They were commissioned against another class of men. And the destruction to come upon this class of men is not put in contract with the preservation of other men, but only with that of the fruits and verdure of the earth; thus, Hurt not the grass, trees, nor any green thing, but only a certain class of men. And in fulfilment, we have the strange spectacle of an army of invaders sparing those things which such armies usually destroy, namely, the face and productions of nature; and, in pursuance of their permission to hurt those men who had not the seal of God in their foreheads, cleaving the skulls of a class of religionists with shaven crowns, who belonged to the synagogue of Satan.” {Daniel And Revelation pg 501.2}.When the Israelites walked in apostasy they were scourged by locusts. See Deuteronomy 28:42 “All thy trees and fruit of thy land shall the locust consume.”

It’s interesting to note from the annals of Sacred History that those who kept the Sabbath were preserved against Mohammedan scourges. The same parallel runs today, as the world is suffering under the hand of terrorism. Prophecy records in Revelation 13:3 “And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.” .The whole world is following after the falsehoods of roman traditions of keeping Sunday holy. Because the world is drunk with Sunday sacredness, in some countries the religion of Mohammed has also come to learn that to scourge a church then it must be done on a Sunday. . For Mohameddanism has come to knowledge that people worship on Sunday thus to scourge a church then it must be on a Sunday. Thus those who keep the true Sabbath are exempt from the Sunday scourges on churches

As the fulfillment of events of the rise, activity and fall of the locusts [Mohammedanism] brought about a widened interest in the word in the millerite movement time period in the 1840s, so today as we see the activities of the locusts should our zeal for the gospel be empowered. This is the burden of Ecclesiastes 12:4-5,It says “And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low; Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets”

Commenting on the terrors of the literal destruction of Jerusalem by the roman armies,Christs prophecy was twofold in nature ,see Great Controversy pg 25.3 “The prophecy which He uttered was twofold in its meaning; while foreshadowing the destruction of Jerusalem, it prefigured also the terrors of the last great day”. So is the character and importance of Ecclesiastes the twelfth chapter, we can trace an outline of the prominent events to take place before the close of time and at the close of time. One of the prominent events before the close of time written in Ecclesiastes the 12th chapter is “Almonds flourishing while grasshoppers a burden”.

“The prophecy of the first angel’s message, brought to view in Revelation 14, found its fulfillment in the Advent movement of 1840-1844. In both Europe and America, men of faith and prayer were deeply moved as their attention was called to the prophecies, and, tracing down the inspired record, they saw convincing evidence that the end of all things was at hand. The Spirit of God urged his servants, to give the warning. Far and wide spread the message of the everlasting gospel, “Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his Judgment is come.” [Revelation 14:7.] {Volume 4 Spirit of Prophecy pg 222.1}

The prophecy of the first angel’s message found its fulfillment around 1840, the same time period that there was an empowerment of the millerite movement after they had seen the prophecies concerning the events of the religion of Revelation 9 fulfill. Thus should it be with us when we see the activities of the religion of revelation 9, we should also be empowered to proclaim the prophecies of the First angel’s message. . “THE Seventh Trumpet was to sound, the Third Woe was to come “quickly” after the close of the sounding of the Sixth Trumpet; and the Sixth Trumpet closed Aug. 11, 1840. Note especially that expression as to the coming of the Third Woe — it “cometh quickly” after the end of the sounding of the Sixth Trumpet. It did not come immediately upon the expiration of the Sixth, as the Sixth came immediately on the expiration of the Fifth: there was a little space between the expiration of the Sixth Trumpet and the beginning of the Seventh; which space is announced, and its shortness signified, by that word “quickly.” And, in this short space between the Sixth and Seventh Trumpets, that mighty angel of Revelation 10 came in with his message, which was to sound over sea and land. {Great Nations of Today pg 85.2}.The Angel of Revelation 10 is the messenger of Adventism. The work of the mighty angel of Revelation 10 is of the same nature with that of the angel in Rev.14:6,7.

It’s also interesting to note the order of the bible. The sixth trumpet [Mohammedanism] is covered in the revelation, the ninth chapter. Before being introduced to the events of the seventh trumpet in the Revelation the eleventh chapter, there is a parenthetical prophecy of revelation the tenth chapter. This time message of Revelation 10 is but another symbol of the message in Revelation 14 ,its in the revelation the fourteenth chapter that we find the first angles message. Following the order we see that sixth trumpet events are followed by the first angel’s message. Remember the understanding of the sixth trumpet brought an empowerment of the millerite movement into proclamation of the first angel’s message.

Revelation 9:7-10 “ And the shapes of the locusts [were] like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads [were] as it were crowns like gold, and their faces [were] as the faces of men. And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as [the teeth] of lions. And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings [was] as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power [was] to hurt men five months.” See image below;

“The Arabian horse takes the lead throughout the world; and skill in horsemanship is the art and science of Arabia. And the barbed Arabs, swift as locusts and armed like scorpions, ready to dart away in a moment, were ever prepared unto battle.”‘And on their heads were as it were crowns like gold.’ When Mohammed entered Medina (A.D. 622), and was first received as its prince, ‘a turban was unfurled before him to supply the deficiency of a standard.’ The turbans of the Saracens, like unto a coronet, were their ornament and their boast.. The rich booty abundantly supplied and frequently renewed them. To assume the turbans is proverbially to turn Mussulman. And the Arabs were anciently distinguished by the miters which they wore.”‘And their faces were as the faces of men.’ ‘The gravity and firmness of the mind of the Arab is conspicuous in his outward demeanor; his only gesture is that of stroking his beard, the venerable symbol of manhood.’ ‘The honor of their beards is most easily wounded.'” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 505.1}

“Long hair” is esteemed an ornament by women. The Arabs, unlike other men, had their hair as the hair of women, or uncut, as their practice is recorded by Pliny and others. But there was nothing effeminate in their character; for, as denoting their ferocity and strength to devour, their teeth were as the teeth of the lions. {Daniel and the Revelation pg 505.3}

The Breastplate. – “The cuirass (or breastplate) was in use among the Arabs in the days of Mohammed. In the battle of Ohud (the second which Mohammed fought) with the Koreish of Mecca (A.D. 624), ‘seven hundred of them were armed with cuirasses.'” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 505.5}

The Sound of Their Wings. – “The charge of the Arabs was not, like that of the Greeks and Romans, the efforts of a firm and compact infantry; their military force was chiefly formed of cavalry and archers. With a touch of the hand, the Arab horses darted away with the swiftness of the wind. “The sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.” Their conquests were marvelous both in rapidity and extent, and their attack was instantaneous. Nor was it less successful against the Romans than the Persians.” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 505.6}

Grasshopper/Locust

In Ecclesiastes 12:5 we read the phrase “Grasshoppers shall be a burden”

Strong’s Concordance definition;
Of uncertain derivation; a locust:-locust

From definition of the root meaning of the word grasshopper we see it can be used interchangeably with a locust.

According to the Revelation, the ninth chapter, a locust is a fit symbol of Mohammedanism.

“The Saracens themselves are called locusts by the prophet John, and the doctrine which impelled their actions was as a dense smoke, issuing out of a furnace. The work of these locust-like warriors is described in the eighth plague, sent upon the land of Egypt in the days when Pharaoh refused to let Israel go. “I will bring the locusts into thy coast: and they shall cover the face of the earth, that one cannot be able to see the earth: and they shall eat the residue of that which is escaped, . . . and shall eat every tree which groweth for you out of the field: and they shall fill thy houses, and the houses of all thy servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians.” The wisdom of Solomon led him to say, “The locusts have no king, yet go they forth all of them by bands.” In using this one figure the divine historian tells the whole story of the Saracen conquest. There was no king, there was no organized government; but there was one common faith which bound the hordes of Arabia to their caliph. When Mohammed first advocated his doctrine, he gained adherents by the power of argument; but this process soon became too slow for his ambition, and arms were taken to defend and extend the territory of the new religion. In the course of a few years, Persia, Syria, Egypt, Africa and Spain had been conquered by Saracen arms. It was in 632 that Caled, the lieutenant of the first caliph, began the conquest of Persia. His efforts were crowned with victory. To every man was offered death, or the acceptance of the Mohammedan doctrine. With the sword above their heads, multitudes thanked God for Mohammed, His prophet. {Story of the Seer of Patmos pg 165.2}

We read in Ecclesiastes that “and the grasshopper [locust] shall be a burden”. Since we saw that a locust is a fit symbol of Islam, we can replace the symbolic word and let it read “and Islam shall be a burden”. Today as the world is struggling with the issue of terrorism we see terror activities bring about the situation as penned in Ecclesiastes 12:4-5. Destruction upon destruction has been accomplished in the name of the religion of the East. The children of the East have been compared to the locust [grasshopper] in the scripture of truth, see-Judges 7:12 “…And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels [were] without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.” “Grasshoppers” are a burden by reason of the trail of destruction that they leave behind; see Judges 6:3-5 where among the destroyers and the work of destruction compared to a grasshoppers work ,are mentioned the “children of the East”.. … “And [so] it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them; And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass. For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; [for] both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.”

“And the doors shall be shut in the streets, when the sound of the grinding is low, and he shall rise up at the voice of the bird, and all the daughters of music shall be brought low; Also [when] they shall be afraid of [that which is] high, and fears [shall be] in the way, and the almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper shall be a burden, and desire shall fail: because man goeth to his long home, and the mourners go about the streets” Ecclesiastes 12:4-5.

These scenes of Ecclesiastes 12:4-5 largely parallel the conditions that men were in when the Saracens domineered, see Revelation 9:6 “ And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.”… ..”Men were weary of life, when life was spared only for a renewal of woe, and when all that they accounted sacred was violated, and all that they held dear constantly endangered, and the savage Saracens domineered over them, or left them only to a momentary repose, ever liable to be suddenly or violently interrupted, as if by the sting of a scorpion.” {Daniel and the Revelation pg 504.4}

Nations were angry;

“Under the fifth was a series of events which have transpired according to prophecy, also under the sixth. There is also a series of events, predicted to take place under the sounding of the seventh angel, which we will now briefly examine. Let the reader turn and read Rev.xi,15-19, and it will be seen that there are four events to take place under the sounding of the seventh angel, and that three of them are prior to the Second Advent. First, “the great voices in heaven, saying, the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord;” second, the “nations were angry;” third, “thy wrath is come;” and fourth, “the time of the dead that they should be judged,” which event is introduced at the coming of Christ” {Second Advent Review, and Sabbath Herald, Vol. 1 (1850-1851) Pg 103.14}

“Before the great day of wrath comes, the nations are to be angry. Under the sounding of the seventh trumpet there are a number of distinct events to take place, two of which are, (1,) The nations were angry, (2,) and thy wrath is come. Rev. xi, 18. This agrees with the other scriptures to show that national troubles will come just before the day of wrath. And what makes it certain, that the present troubles among the nations are the ones referred to in the prophecies, is the fact that the signs in the heavens have already been seen, which were to be followed by distress of nations and perplexity” {The Bible Class pg 114.1}.

One of the grave reasons for the angering of nations is the burden of the seed of Ishmael, see Genesis 16:11-12 “And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou [art] with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.And he will be a wild man; his hand [will be] against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”. Stephen Haskell says “ Near the close of the sixth century there was born in Mecca, of the princes of Arabia, a man who claimed direct descent from Ishmael, the son of Abraham. This man was Mohammed, the son of Abdallah, and the founder of a faith, which, to-day has many thousand adherents.” {Story of the Seer of Patmos pg 163}. The locusts are a burden to all nations and all nations hands have come together to fight the locusts.

“Separated from his father, and embittered by the strife and contention of a home destitute of the love and fear of God, Ishmael was driven to choose the wild, marauding life of the desert chief, “his hand” “against every man, and every man’s hand against him.” Genesis 16:12. In his latter days he repented of his evil ways and returned to his father’s God, but the stamp of character given to his posterity remained. The powerful nation descended from him were a turbulent, heathen people, who were ever an annoyance and affliction to the descendants of Isaac”. {Patriarchs and Prophets p 174.1}

See [Bates’ Pamphlet #2] Second Advent Way Marks and High Heaps, “If the wars and various calamities which fell upon men under the fifth trumpet, made it a woe trumpet, and the woe under the sixth trumpet. Still more severe in the wars and cholera, and various epidemics, do not the awful calamities which have and are taking place in the world, teach us plainly that a greater woe than these has already come? I think Jesus has taught us this plainly in xxii. Luke, in the signs which should precede his coming, viz. “Distress of nations, with perplexity, sea and waves roaring, men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things that are coming on the earth, for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.” And then the Son of Man will come.”

Note that according to Ecclesiastes the time that the locusts are a burden the same time almonds flourish.

Almonds

Strong’s concordance definition

From H8245; the almond (tree or nut as being the earliest in bloom): almond tree.

From the above description we see that the word almond is derived from “H8245”. The concordance description of H8245 is “to be alert,that is sleepless;hence to be on the lookout[whether for good or for ill];-hasten,remain ,wake ,watch.”

“Almond tree shall flourish, and the grasshopper [locust] shall be a burden”; almond derived from the root word wake, watch, alert.As there was an empowerment and awakening of the millerites when they followed on to know the events involving the locusts in the Revelation,the ninth chapter, so should there be an awakening to a study of the prophecies among Adventism today while we behold the activities of the locusts in acts of terrorism. Remember; almonds [from root word wake, alert] flourish when locust [Islam] a burden. There should be an empowerment awakening, flourishing of our zeal for the everlasting gospel when we see these things.

It’s a time when like Peter we are to awake and behold the glory of the Lord, the glory of the angel of revelation 18. See [Luke 9:32 “But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him.”]…. “And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof].” [Romans 13:11-14]

“Any question that Satan can arouse in the mind to create doubt in regard to the grand history of the past travels of the people of God will please his satanic majesty and is an offense to God. The tidings of the Lord’s soon coming in power and great glory to our world is truth, and in 1840 many voices were raised in its proclamation. The dealings of God with His people should be often repeated. He has worked as a wonder-working God. He has baptized His chosen messengers with the Holy Spirit. The past history of the cause of God needs often to be brought before the people, young and old, that they may be familiar with it. How frequently were the waymarks set up by the Lord in His dealing with ancient Israel, lest they should forget the history of the past. Christ, their invisible Leader, commanded Moses to form these events into song, that the people of Israel might teach them to their children” {Volume 9 Manuscript Releases pg 134}.

“Almonds flourish, Grasshoppers a burden”

“Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Jeremiah, what seest thou? And I said, I see a rod of an almond tree. Then said the LORD unto me, Thou hast well seen: for I will hasten my word to perform it. And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying, What seest thou? And I said, I see a seething pot; and the face thereof [is] toward the north.Then the LORD said unto me, Out of the north an evil shall break forth upon all the inhabitants of the land”. [Jeremiah 1:11-14.]

The sign of the almond tree signified hastening of coming events.

What’s to flourish? To flourish is to bloom or to blossom. What causes a tree to blossom? It’s the rain.

“God’s purpose toward His people, and the glorious possibilities before them, had been set forth in the beautiful words, “That they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that He might be glorified,” Isaiah 61:3. The dying Jacob, under the Spirit of inspiration, had said of his best-loved son, “Joseph is a fruitful bough, even a fruitful bough by a well; whose branches run over the wall.” And he said, “The God of thy Father” “shall help thee,” the Almighty “shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under.” Genesis 49:22, 25. So God had planted Israel as a goodly vine by the wells of life. He had made His vineyard “in a very fruitful hill.” He had “fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine.” Isaiah 5:1, 2.” [Christ Object Lesson pg 214.3]

Gods people are compared to trees, trees of righteousness. Its rain that causes the almond tree to blossom/flourish ,its rain that causes the trees to blossom/flourish and give fruit ,see Job 14:7-9, “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease. Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground; [Yet] through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.”….. By the outpouring of the latter rain we are to have the experience of Israel Isaiah 27:6 “He shall cause them that come of Jacob to take root: Israel shall blossom and bud, and fill the face of the world with fruit.”

We saw that almond tree signifies hastening. When we see the burden of the acts of mohammedanism and Gods people[trees of righteousness] around receiving the experience of the sprinkling of the latter rain[ flourishing] then we shall know that the events leading to the return of Christ are hastening. “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer [is] nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, [even] at the doors.” [Mathew 24:32-33].

“The ungodly cities of our world are to be swept away by the besom of destruction. In the calamities that are now befalling immense buildings and large portions of cities, God is showing us what will come upon the whole earth. He has told us, “Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: so likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it [the coming of the Son of man] is near, even at the doors.” Matthew 24:32, 33.” [Counsels on Health pg 268.3]

“Christ had bidden His people watch for the signs of His advent and rejoice as they should behold the tokens of their coming King. “When these things begin to come to pass,” He said, “then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” He pointed His followers to the budding trees of spring, and said: “When they now shoot forth, ye see and know of your own selves that summer is now nigh at hand. So likewise ye, when ye see these things come to pass, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.” Luke 21:28, 30, 31.” {Great Controversy pg 308.2} .

As we watch and see the work of the locusts we should prepare our hearts for the sprinkling of the latter rain or rather it’s a season of shooting up [flourishing] for latter growth showered by latter rain experience and bring forth good deeds of righteousness as a witness to the world that we are hastening to the coming of the Lord; see Amos 7:1 “Thus hath the Lord GOD showed unto me; and, behold, he formed grasshoppers in the beginning of the shooting up of the latter growth; and, lo, [it was] the latter growth after the king’s mowings.” .See 1 Kings 8:36-37 “Then hear thou in heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, that thou teach them the good way wherein they should walk, and give rain upon thy land, which thou hast given to thy people for an inheritance. If there be in the land famine, if there be pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust, [or] if there be caterpillar; if their enemy besiege them in the land of their cities; whatsoever plague, whatsoever sickness [there be];”

Aaron’s rod budded

“And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, and every one of their princes gave him a rod apiece, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, [even] twelve rods: and the rod of Aaron [was] among their rods. And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tabernacle of witness.
And it came to pass, that on the morrow Moses went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds. And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel: and they looked, and took every man his rod.[Numbers 17:6-9]

In the above text we get where Aaron’s rod budded and brought forth almonds. This evidently shows that it was an almond rod. What was settled by it budding?

In patriarchs and prophets we read “But further evidence was given that the priesthood had been established in the family of Aaron. By divine direction each tribe prepared a rod and wrote upon it the name of the tribe. The name of Aaron was upon that of Levi. The rods were laid up in the tabernacle, “before the testimony.” The blossoming of any rod was to be a token that the Lord had chosen that tribe for the priesthood. On the morrow, “behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and brought forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and yielded almonds.” It was shown to the people, and afterward laid up in the tabernacle as a witness to succeeding generations. This miracle effectually settled the question of the priesthood. {Patriarchs and Prophets pg 403.1}

The budding established the priesthood of the house of Levi and that the Lord had chosen the tribe for the priest hood. Peter says “But ye [are] a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:”[1Peter 2:9].

“Grasshoppers a burden almond flourish”; As we see the burden of the locusts [Islam] today, our being chosen as a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and a peculiar people should be established. “The Righteousness of Christ in us the hope of Glory should flourish as a branch. [Psalm 11:28]

“The Lord made a special covenant with ancient Israel: “Now therefore, if ye will obey My voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto Me above all people: for all the earth is Mine: and ye shall be unto Me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.” Exodus 19:5, 6. He addresses His commandment-keeping people in these last days, “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” “Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from freshly lusts, which war against the soul.” 1 Peter 2:9, 11”. {Counsels on Health pg 567.1}

At this time of the locusts burden, It’s a time to abstain from fleshy lusts which war against the soul, for our redemption is nigh.

“But Christ has given us no assurance that to attain perfection of character is an easy matter. A noble, all-round character is not inherited. It does not come to us by accident. A noble character is earned by individual effort through the merits and grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the powers of the mind; we form the character. It is formed by hard, stern battles with self. Conflict after conflict must be waged against hereditary tendencies. We shall have to criticize ourselves closely, and allow not one unfavorable trait to remain uncorrected. The truth is no truth to the one who does not reveal, by his elevated spiritual character, a power beyond that which the world can give, and influence corresponding in its sacred, peculiar character to the truth itself. He who is sanctified by the truth will exert a saving, vital influence upon all with whom he comes in contact. This is Bible religion. We need constantly a fresh revelation of Christ, a daily experience that harmonizes with His teachings. High and holy attainments are within our reach. Continual progress in knowledge and virtue is God’s purpose for us. His law is the echo of His own voice, giving to all the invitation, “Come up higher. Be holy, holier still.” Every day we may advance in perfection of Christian character.” {Amazing Grace pg 146.5}

Isaiah says “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. [Isaiah 61:3]

Almonds and the Olive tree Typology

“And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all [of] gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which [are] upon the top thereof: And two olive trees by it, one upon the right [side] of the bowl, and the other upon the left [side] thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What [are] these, my lord? Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This [is] the word of the LORD unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of hosts.Who [art] thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel [thou shalt become] a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone [thereof with] shoutings, [crying], Grace, grace unto it. Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel [with] those seven; they [are] the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth. Then answered I, and said unto him, What [are] these two olive trees upon the right [side] of the candlestick and upon the left [side] thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What [be these] two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden [oil] out of themselves? And he answered me and said, Knowest thou not what these [be]? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These [are] the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.” [Zechariah 4:2-14]

“In this vision the two olive trees which stand before God are represented as emptying the golden oil out of themselves through golden tubes into the bowl of the candlestick. From this the lamps of the sanctuary are fed, that they may give a bright, continuous light. So from the anointed ones that stand in God’s presence the fullness of divine light and love and power is imparted to His people, that they may impart to others light and joy and refreshing. Those who are thus enriched are to enrich others with the treasure of God’s love. {Prophets and Kings 594.1}

Gods people are compared to a candle stick; see- Revelation 1:13; “Christ is spoken of as walking in the midst of the golden candlesticks. Thus is symbolized His relation to the churches. He is in constant communication with His people. He knows their true state. He observes their order, their piety, their devotion. Although He is high priest and mediator in the sanctuary above, yet He is represented as walking up and down in the midst of His churches on the earth. With untiring wakefulness and unremitting vigilance, He watches to see whether the light of any of His sentinels is burning dim or going out. If the candlesticks were left to mere human care, the flickering flame would languish and die; but He is the true watchman in the Lord’s house, the true warden of the temple courts. His continued care and sustaining grace are the source of life and light.” {Acts of the Apostles pg 586.1} .

God commanded Moses to make a Candlestick as a sanctuary furniture, the bowls were made like unto an almond; see Exodus 25:33-34 “Three bowls made like unto almonds, [with] a knop and a flower in one branch; and three bowls made like almonds in the other branch, [with] a knop and a flower: so in the six branches that come out of the candlestick. And in the candlestick [shall be] four bowls made like unto almonds, [with] their knops and their flowers.”In the account of the Olive trees and the Golden candle stick the oil was emptied into the bowls that were made in the pattern of almonds. It’s then apparent that when we think of an almond, we should think of the candle stick thus the sanctuary and when we think of the sanctuary and candlestick we should think of almonds”

We have seen in Zechariah’s olive tree typology that “ from the anointed ones that stand in God’s presence the fullness of divine light and love and power is imparted to His people”. This divine light is the Holy Spirit [oil]; we have also seen that when grasshoppers are a burden it’s a time of almonds to flourish, they are to flourish by reason of the oil. Thus when we see the burden of Islam we should know that it’s a time to receive of the latter rain, for the trees of righteousness [almond tree] to flourish and this should take our minds back to the oil that fills the bowls of the sanctuary furniture made like almonds or rather it’s a time to uplift the sanctuary massage for “the correct understanding of the ministration in the heavenly sanctuary is the foundation of our faith.” {Counsels for the Church pg 347.1}:

It’s a time to build the old waste places foundations of Adventism. “To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.” “ Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward. Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I [am]. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity; And [if] thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness [be] as the noon day: And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.And [they that shall be] of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in. [Isaiah 58;8-12]

“All who have received the light upon these subjects are to bear testimony of the great truths which God has committed to them. The sanctuary in heaven is the very center of Christ’s work in behalf of men. It concerns every soul living upon the earth. It opens to view the plan of redemption, bringing us down to the very close of time, and revealing the triumphant issue of the contest between righteousness and sin. It is of the utmost importance that all should thoroughly investigate these subjects, and be able to give an answer to every one that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them.–The Great Controversy, pp. 488, 489. (1888)” {Evangelism pg 222.1}

From the parallel movement principle; What was the experience of the millerites after understanding the prophecies of the Revelation, the ninth chapter? Commenting on the millerite time period prophet white says “We are to be established in the faith, in the light of the truth given us in our early experience. At that time one error after another pressed in upon us; ministers and doctors brought in new doctrines. We would search the Scriptures with much prayer, and the Holy Spirit would bring the truth to our minds. Sometimes whole nights would be devoted to searching the Scriptures, and earnestly asking God for guidance. Companies of devoted men and women assembled for this purpose. The power of God would come upon me, and I was enabled clearly to define what is truth and what is error. As the points of our faith were thus established, our feet were placed upon a solid foundation. We accepted the truth point by point, under the demonstration of the Holy Spirit. I would be taken off in vision, and explanations would be given me. I was given illustrations of heavenly things, and of the sanctuary, so that we were placed where light was shining on us in clear, distinct rays.{Gospel Workers pg 302.2}

If there be sores in the lands by reason of the locusts [Mohammedanism], then we need to turn to God and he will hear and send rain for the blossoming of the trees of righteousness, it’s a time for almonds to flourish. See Jeremiah 6:27-28 “Then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy servants, and of thy people Israel, when thou hast taught them the good way, wherein they should walk; and send rain upon thy land, which thou hast given unto thy people for an inheritance. If there be dearth in the land, if there be pestilence, if there be blasting, or mildew, locusts, or caterpillars; if their enemies besiege them in the cities of their land; whatsoever sore or whatsoever sickness [there be]”

“Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain” Ecclesiastes 12:1-2.
