As it was at Christ’s First Advent
“Of all the lessons to be learned from our Lord’s first great temptation none is more important than that bearing upon the control of the appetites and passions. In all ages, temptations appealing to the physical nature have been most effectual in corrupting and degrading mankind. Through intemperance, Satan works to destroy the mental and moral powers that God gave to man as a priceless endowment. Thus it becomes impossible for men to appreciate things of eternal worth. Through sensual indulgence, Satan seeks to blot from the soul every trace of likeness to God. The uncontrolled indulgence and consequent disease and degradation that existed at Christ’s first advent will again exist, with intensity of evil, before His second coming. Christ declares that the condition of the world will be as in the days before the Flood, and as in Sodom and Gomorrah. Every imagination of the thoughts of the heart will be evil continually. Upon the very verge of that fearful time we are now living, and to us should come home the lesson of the Saviour’s fast. Only by the inexpressible anguish which Christ endured can we estimate the evil of unrestrained indulgence. His example declares that our only hope of eternal life is through bringing the appetites and passions into subjection to the will of God”.1

It’s evident that “Through sensual indulgence, Satan seeks to blot from the soul every trace of likeness to God” and remember the “The seal of the living God will be placed upon those only who bear a likeness to Christ in character”. If we fail to get the seal of God then we will get the mark of the beast.

Only two classes
“There can be only two classes. Each party is distinctly stamped, either with the seal of the living God, or with the mark of the beast or his image”.2

“As we near the close of time the demarcation between the children of light and the children of darkness will be more and more decided. They will be more and more at variance. This difference is expressed in the words of Christ, “born again”–created anew in Christ, dead to the world, and alive unto God. These are the walls of separation that divide the heavenly from the earthly and describe the difference between those who belong to the world and those who are chosen out of it, who are elect, precious in the sight of God.–Special Testimony to the Battle Creek Church”. 3

In the above paragraph we see that “As we near the close of time the demarcation between the children of light and the children of darkness will be more and more decided. Through sensual indulgence, Satan seeks to blot from the soul every trace of likeness to God from the children of darkness thus preparing them to accept the mark of the beast when the decree goes forth.

“God has permitted the light of health reform to shine upon us in these last days, that by walking in the light we may escape many of the dangers to which we shall be exposed. Satan is working with great power to lead men to indulge appetite, gratify inclination, and spend their days in heedless folly. He presents attractions in a life of selfish enjoyment and of sensual indulgence. Intemperance saps the energies of both mind and body. He who is thus overcome, has placed himself upon Satan’s ground, where he will be tempted and annoyed, and finally controlled at pleasure by the enemy of all righteousness.”4

A Merry Heart
Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Strong’s Concordance definition
From H8055;blithe or gleeful;-[be] glad,joyful..

Joyful is Merry: Thus “a Joyful heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones “

Psalm 113:9 He maketh the barren woman to keep house, [and to be] a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.

The psalmist tells us that this Joy can fill barren women and they be joy-full mothers of children. This Joy is a solution to barrenness. For this Joy is like medicine. In a secondary sense, since a woman represents a church then a church that doesn’t bear fruits can bear if it finds this joy .For this Joy is like medicine.

Ecclesiastes 9:9 Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that [is] thy portion in [this] life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

For this Joy is like medicine, it is a solution to family lifes. For men who get this joy will love their wives.

“The gospel is a wonderful simplifier of life’s problems. Its instruction, heeded, would make plain many a perplexity and save us from many an error. It teaches us to estimate things at their true value and to give the most effort to the things of greatest worth–the things that will endure. This lesson is needed by those upon who rests the responsibility of selecting a home. They should not allow themselves to be diverted from the highest aim. Let them remember that the home on earth is to be a symbol of and a preparation for the home in heaven. 5

“The gospel is a wonderful simplifier of life’s problems”. Thus this joy has to do with the Gospel. And it simplifies barrenness, family life’s and all other problems for “a Joyful heart doeth good [like] a medicine”.

Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth [herself] with her jewels.

From the account of Isaiah to have this Joy we need to be clothed with the Garments of salvation or rather this joy clothes us with the garments of salvation. The gospel of salvation is a simplifier of all life’s problems.

Garments of salvation is the robe of righteousness;

“Your heavenly Father will take from you the garments defiled by sin. In the beautiful parabolic prophecy of Zechariah, the high priest Joshua, standing clothed in filthy garments before the angel of the Lord, represents the sinner. And the word is spoken by the Lord, “Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him He said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. . . . So they set a fair miter upon his head, and clothed him with garments.” Zechariah 3:4, 5. Even so God will clothe you with “the garments of salvation,” and cover you with “the robe of righteousness.” Isaiah 61:10. “Though ye have lien among the pots, yet shall ye be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.” Psalm 68:13”. 6

Family Members Are Separated

“Those who have been members of the same family are separated. A mark is placed upon the righteous. “They shall be Mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up My jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him” [Malachi 3:17]. Those who have been obedient to God’s commandments will unite with the company of the saints in light. They shall enter in through the gates into the city, and have right to the tree of life. “The one shall be taken.” His name shall stand in the book of life, while those with whom he associated shall have the mark of eternal separation from God” 7

At the time of the Sunday law decree among those who have received light in one class “ A mark is placed upon the righteous” this is the seal of God. The other class that has rejected light shall have the “mark of eternal separation from God” This is the mark of the beast.

Ellen white says “His lessons of instruction and His holy life, if followed, would stay the tide of physical and moral wretchedness that has so defiled the moral image of God in man that he bears scarcely a resemblance to the noble Adam as he stood in Eden in his holy innocency. Every prohibition of God is for the health and eternal well-being of man. In obedience to all the requirements of God there will be peace and happiness unaccompanied with shame or reproaches of conscience. {Con 72.3} .

For us to have the image of God restored in us we must obey Gods law of health which for every prohibition of God is for the health and eternal well-being of man. If we form the image of God through health reform then we shall escape the image and mark of the beast ;“the mark of eternal separation from God “ for as quoted in Desire of Ages that “Through intemperance, Satan works to destroy the mental and moral powers that God gave to man as a priceless endowment. Thus it becomes impossible for men to appreciate things of eternal worth. Through sensual indulgence, Satan seeks to blot from the soul every trace of likeness to God”

“The health reform, I was shown, is a part of the third angel’s message, and is just as closely connected with it as are the arm and hand with the human body. I saw that we as a people must make an advance move in this great work. Ministers and people must act in concert. God’s people are not prepared for the loud cry of the third angel. They have a work to do for themselves which they should not leave for God to do for them. He has left this work for them to do. It is an individual work; one cannot do it for another. “Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” Gluttony is the prevailing sin of this age. Lustful appetite makes slaves of men and women, and beclouds their intellects and stupefies their moral sensibilities to such a degree that the sacred, elevated truths of God’s word are not appreciated. The lower propensities have ruled men and women. In order to be fitted for translation, the people of God must know themselves. They must understand in regard to their own physical frames, that they may be able with the psalmist to exclaim, “I will praise Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” They should ever have the appetite in subjection to the moral and intellectual organs. The body should be servant to the mind, and not the mind to the body.8

“The health reform, I was shown, is a part of the third angel’s message”. The three angels massage is the everlasting Gospel.

Prophet White says “The messages of Revelation 14 are those by which the world is to be tested; they are the everlasting gospel and are to be sounded everywhere.9

Remember “The gospel is a wonderful simplifier of life’s problems”. The right arm to this Gospel body is health Reform. The three angles warn against the mark of the beast and since health reform is part of third angles massage, then to avoid the mark of the beast we must also embrace health reform for it can’t be separated from the everlasting gospel body.

Not a peg or pin of Health Principles is to be removed

“The proclamation of the first, second, and third angels’ messages has been located by the word of Inspiration. Not a peg or pin is to be removed. No human authority has any more right to change the location of these messages than to substitute the New Testament for the Old. The Old Testament is the gospel in figures and symbols. The New Testament is the substance. One is as essential as the other. The Old Testament presents lessons from the lips of Christ, and these lessons have not lost their force in any particular.”-10

Health reform being the right hand of the everlasting Gospel then just as not a peg or pin of the everlasting Gospel is not to be moved so is it with Gods laws of natural health.

What is this Joy[Merry]?

John 15:11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and [that] your joy might be full.

For us to have joy and have it in full, then we must consider what Christ had said before verse number eleven in John the fifteenth chapter.

John 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. 15:2Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every [branch] that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 15:3Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 15:4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. 15:5 I am the vine, ye [are] the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. 15:6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast [them] into the fire, and they are burned. 15:7If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 15:8Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 15:9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 15:10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.

For us to have Joy and have it in full, then we must abide in Christ and him in us; Jesus is “the Sun of righteousness with healing in his wings”; Malachi 4:2.Also when we heed to those things spoken to us by and of Christ’s then we shall have joy and in full. “a Joyful heart doeth good [like] a medicine” If Christ’s who has healing in his wings abides in us then our heart will do Good like a medicine .Then we shall walk in divine health and form his image thus avoiding the image and mark of the beast.

Acts 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. 2:28 Thou hast made known to me the ways of life; thou shalt make me full of joy with thy countenance.

With the Lords countenance we are made Joyful;

Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

A merry/Joyful heart maketh a cheerful countenance. This means that when Christ[Joy] abides in us with his joyful countenance we shall in return reflect his image and have a cheerful countenance.

1 John 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life; 1:2 (For the life was manifested, and we have seen [it], and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;) 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship [is] with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ. 1:4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.

Cheerful countenance medicine to a fierce countenance.

Deutronomy 28:50 A nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor show favour to the young:

“By the Spirit of Inspiration, looking far down the ages, Moses pictured the terrible scenes of Israel’s final overthrow as a nation, and the destruction of Jerusalem by the armies of Rome: “The Lord shall bring a nation against thee from far, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flieth; a nation whose tongue thou shalt not understand; a nation of fierce countenance, which shall not regard the person of the old, nor show favor to the young.”11

Rome is described as “a nation of fierce countenance”.

Daniel 8:23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.

“A king of fierce countenance.” Moses, in predicting punishment to come upon the Jews from this same power, calls it “a nation of fierce countenance.” Deut.28:49,50. No people made a more formidable appearance in warlike array than the Romans. “Understanding dark sentences.” Moses, in the scripture just referred to, says, “Whose tongue thou shalt not understand.” This could not be said of the Babylonians, Persians, or Greeks, in reference to the Jews; for the Chaldean and Greek languages were used to a greater or less extent in Palestine. This was not the case, however, with the Latin.” 12

In the book of Revelation Chapters 12 and 13 the Roman power as a whole is brought to view in its two phases, pagan and papal; And a fierce countenance is of the roman power. We have seen that a cheerful countenance is the image of Christ then definitely a fierce countenance is the image of the beast.

If we obey Gods law on health then we shall form his Image; if we don’t then remain to form the image of the beast.

Health reform and the lambs book of life.

Revelation 21:27 And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither [whatsoever] worketh abomination, or [maketh] a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

From the above text anything that defileth shall not enter into the New Jerusalem. For us to have our names in the lamb’s book of life retained we must not defile ourselves.

Daniel 1:8 says “But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.”

“The food appointed them would include meats pronounced unclean by the law of Moses. They requested the officer who had them in charge to give them a more simple fare; but he hesitated, fearing that such rigid abstinence as they proposed would affect their personal appearance unfavorably, and bring himself into disfavor with the king. Daniel pleaded for a ten days’ trial. This was granted; and at the expiration of that time these youth were found to be far more healthy in appearance than were those who had partaken of the king’s dainties. Hence the simple “pulse and water” which they at first requested, was thereafter the food of Daniel and his companions.13

For us to be retained in the Lambs book of life and have a place in the New Jerusalem then like Daniel we must purpose not to defile ourselves, for anything that defileth and defiled shall in no wise enter the New Jerusalem.

Revelation 13:8 and all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.

All that shall wonder after the first beast of revelation 13 “papacy” to receive its image and mark shall be blotted out of Lambs book of life. Those like Daniel and the three Hebrew boys who shall not defile themselves by walking on the principles of health reform shall not wonder after the beast and shall have their names retained in the lamb’s book of life. Daniel and the three Hebrew boys by faith looked for a city whose builder and maker is God; thus they could not defile themselves with the Kings portion for they desired to have their names retained in the book of life.

Egyptian Medicines

Jeremiah 46:11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm, O virgin, the daughter of Egypt: in vain shalt thou use many medicines; [for] thou shalt not be cured.

“Moses was a type of Christ. He received the words from the mouth of God, and spoke them to the people. God saw fit to discipline Moses in the school of affliction and poverty, before he could be prepared to lead the armies of Israel in their travels from Egypt to the earthly Canaan. The Israel of God who are now passing on to the heavenly Canaan have a Captain who needed no earthly teaching, as did Moses, to perfect him for the work of a divine teacher and leader to guide his people into a better and heavenly country. He manifested no human weakness or imperfection; yet he died in order to obtain an entrance for us into the Promised Land. Moses pointed the people forward to Christ. 14

“Moses was a type of Christ .He lead the armies of Israel in their travels from Egypt to the earthly Canaan”. Christ in now leading us from the antitypical Egypt [the world] to the heavenly cannan.Egypt signifies the world. Thus in a secondary sense Jeremiah 46:11 tells us that many medicines of the world cannot cure us.

Talking on the Use of Drugs Ellen White Says “A practice that is laying the foundation of a vast amount of disease and of even more serious evils is the free use of poisonous drugs. When attacked by disease, many will not take the trouble to search out the cause of their illness. Their chief anxiety is to rid themselves of pain and inconvenience.By the use of poisonous drugs, many bring upon themselves lifelong illness, and many lives are lost that might be saved by the use of natural methods of healing. The poisons contained in many so-called remedies create habits and appetites that mean ruin to both soul and body. Many of the popular nostrums called patent medicines, and even some of the drugs dispensed by physicians, act a part in laying the foundation of the liquor habit, the opium habit, the morphine habit, that are so terrible a curse to society. Drug medication, as it is generally practiced, is a curse. Educate away from drugs. Use them less and less, and depend more upon hygienic agencies; then nature will respond to God’s physicians—pure air, pure water, proper exercise, a clear conscience. Those who persist in the use of tea, coffee, and flesh meats will feel the need of drugs, but many might recover without one grain of medicine if they would obey the laws of health. Drugs need seldom be used.  {CCh 105.4}

Drug medication, as it is generally practiced, is a curse. Educate away from drugs. Use them less and less, and depend more upon hygienic agencies as Jeremiah calls us to the Balm of Gilead’s simple natural remedies.

Jeremiah 8:22 says “[Is there] no balm in Gilead; [is there] no physician there? why then is not the health of the daughter of my people recovered? “

Their health was not recovered just like the health of those that depend on worldly medical practices by ministration of drugs are under a curse.

“But in no case are you to stand as do the physicians of the world to exalt allopathy above every other practice, and call all other methods quackery and error; for from the beginning to the present time the results of allopathy have made a most objectionable showing. There has been loss of life in your sanitarium because drugs have been administered, and these give no chance for nature to do her work of restoration. Drug medication has broken up the power of the human machinery, and the patients have died. Others have carried the drugs away with them, making less effective the simple remedies nature uses to restore the system. The students in your institution [Battle Creek Sanitarium] are not to be educated to regard drugs as a necessity. They are to be educated to leave drugs alone”.15

Balm of Gilead

“The people listened to the words of mercy flowing so freely from the lips of the Son of God. They heard the gracious words, so simple and so plain that they were as the balm of Gilead to their souls. The healing of His divine hand brought gladness and life to the dying, and ease and health to those suffering with disease. The day seemed to them like heaven upon earth, and they were utterly unconscious of how long it had been since they had eaten anything” 16

The words of Christ are likened to the balm of Gilead. Those in whom he will abide in them will be healed of the balm of Gilead, and will form his image contrary to those who reject the words of Christ and go for and after Egyptian [wordly] medicines and only to form the image of the beast and receive his mark for such medicines weaken the body and mind that it cant resist temptations.

”Among the mountains of Gilead, east of the Jordan, there dwelt in the days of Ahab a man of faith and prayer whose fearless ministry was destined to check the rapid spread of apostasy in Israel. Far removed from any city of renown, and occupying no high station in life, Elijah the Tishbite nevertheless entered upon his mission confident in God’s purpose to prepare the way before him and to give him abundant success. The word of faith and power was upon his lips, and his whole life was devoted to the work of reform. His was the voice of one crying in the wilderness to rebuke sin and press back the tide of evil. And while he came to the people as a reprover of sin, his message offered the balm of Gilead to the sin-sick souls of all who desired to be healed”17.

In the above paragraph the works of Elijah and John the Baptist is typified and compared to the balm of Gilead. Since the Seventh Day Adventist movement is the third Elijah we should move in the power and spirit of Elijah by enforcing the medical missionary movement ministry that will direct the world from Egyptian medicine to nature’s simple remedies or rather balm of Gilead.

Broken spirit and the dry bones of Ezekiel 37

Proverbs 15:13 A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance: but by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.

Proverbs 17:22 A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

Those that don’t have a merry heart that’s to say Jesus shall not be full of Joy and will have sorrow of heart which brings about a broken spirit and the testimony of Proverbs 17:22 witnesses that a broken spirit drieth the bones.Dry bones as those dry bones of Ezekiel 37.

“This class is well represented by the valley of dry bones Ezekiel saw in vision. Those who have had committed to them the treasures of truth, and yet who are dead in trespasses and sin, need to be created anew in Christ Jesus. There is so little real vitality in the church at the present time, that it takes constant labor to give men the appearance of life to the professed people of God. When the converting power of God comes upon the people, it will be made manifest by activity. They will become workers, and will esteem the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of the world.18

For the church to have vitality and give an appearance of the life of professed people of God. Then the converting power of God through health reform [merry heart/Joy], through the experience of the early and later rain should be breathed and fall as dew on the dry bones for us to reflect the image of Christ and avoid the image of the beast and mark of the beast.

In SDA Bible Commentary we read “But not only does this simile of the dry bones apply to the world, but also to those who have been blessed with great light; for they also are like the skeletons of the valley. They have the form of men, the framework of the body; but they have not spiritual life. But the parable does not leave the dry bones merely knit together into the forms of men; for it is not enough that there is symmetry of limb and feature. The breath of life must vivify the bodies, that they may stand upright, and spring into activity. These bones represent the house of Israel, the church of God, and the hope of the church is the vivifying influence of the Holy Spirit. The Lord must breathe upon the dry bones, that they may live. {4BC 1165.6}

The hope of the church is the vivifying influence of the Holy Spirit through health reform.
