Samson; The Foolish Virgin

By Lang’o Evans
S.O.T.P. Director/ Speaker

The Lord names individuals according to their character, and since He has chosen the names of the twelve sons of Jacob,-whence came the twelve tribes of Israel,-as names of the twelve divisions of the one hundred and forty-four thousand, there must be something in the character of Jacob’s sons and of the twelve tribes of Israel worthy of careful study. {Cross and Its Shadow pg 287.1}

Manoah, of the tribe of Dan

And there was a certain man of Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name [was] Manoah; and his wife [was] barren, and bare not…And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou [art] barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son Judges 13:2-3

On the border of the hill country overlooking the Philistine plain was the little town of Zorah. Here dwelt the family of Manoah, of the tribe of Dan, one of the few households that amid the general defection had remained true to Jehovah. To the childless wife of Manoah “the Angel of Jehovah” appeared with the message that she should have a son, through whom God would begin to deliver Israel.{Patriarchs and Prophets pg 560.2}

There is a significance in the meaning of names given to persons by the Lord. Jacob’s name was not changed to Israel until, after long and weary wrestling, he had prevailed with God and men. 1 It was after Joses had given all his possessions to supply the needs of the cause of God, that he was called Barnabas, or “the son of consolation.” 2 {Cross and Its Shadow pg 287.2}

Its testified that Manoah the father of Samson was of the tribe of Dan,thus Samson was of the tribe of Dan and this has a play in his character. ‘Dan was the fifth son of Jacob, and his descendants composed one of the strong tribes of Israel. Sixty-four thousand four hundred warriors were marshaled under the standard of Dan as they entered the promised land. For some reason the large tribe of Dan was given one of the smallest portions of the inheritance, and in time they pushed northward and fought against “Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.” Jeroboam set up his golden calves, one in Bethel in the territory of Ephraim, the other in the city of Dan; and the Danites were given over to idolatry. Even before the days of Jeroboam, we find the Danites worshiping graven images.’ {Cross and Its Shadow pg 374.1}

And the woman bare a son, and called his name Samson: and the child grew, and the LORD blessed him. [Judges 13:2-3, 3:24]

‘Samson is the only ruler furnished Israel by the tribe of Dan. He judged Israel for twenty years. The blessing pronounced upon Dan by Jacob, portrays his character: “Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward.” Like the blessing pronounced upon Reuben, the first part portrays the character he might have possessed, if he had embraced the opportunities God placed in his pathway. What a contrast between a judge, respected and honored by all, and a serpent by the roadside, ready to fasten its deadly fangs into the flesh of every passer-by! {Cross and Its Shadow pg 375.3}

In his “Bible Handbook,” p. 185, Dr. Angus states: “Nearly all the names in Hebrew are significant, and knowledge of their meaning throws a light upon the context.”

A knowledge of the meaning of the name ‘Samson’ will through much light upon the context.

Samson ;Strong’s concordance definition
From H8121; sunlight; Shimshon, an Israelite: – Samson.

The name Samson means ‘sunlight’. As seen, he was from the tribe of Dan and if Samson would ‘embrace the opportunities God placed in his pathway’ then he would be a sober Judge, ‘a sunlight’ , and he would be described as ‘He that ruleth over men [must be] just, ruling in the fear of God. And [he shall be] as the light of the morning, [when] the sun riseth, [even] a morning without clouds; [as] the tender grass [springing] out of the earth by clear shining after rain. [2 Samuel 23:4].‘Dan shall judge his people, as one of the tribes of Israel.’ Genesis 49:16, on the contrary if he would have despised God then he would be a ‘serpent’. Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. Genesis 49:16. And ‘Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better’. Ecclesistes 10:11.

Samson’s Willful Choice
‘God’s providential care had been over Samson, that he might be prepared to accomplish the work which he was called to do. At the very outset of life he was surrounded with favorable conditions for physical strength, intellectual vigor, and moral purity. But under the influence of wicked associates he let go that hold upon God which is man’s only safeguard, and he was swept away by the tide of evil. Those who in the way of duty are brought into trial may be sure that God will preserve them; but if men willfully place themselves under the power of temptation, they will fall sooner or later. {Adventist Home pg 460.3}

Samson failed to choose the character that would have made him ‘a sunlight’ but rather chose to become ‘a serpent’ so is it with them that are double minded for ‘A double minded man [is] unstable in all his ways’ James 1;8;. Unstable as waters.Like Reuben was to choose between two characters but fell into the evil character because of his instability. ‘Reuben, thou [art] my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power: Unstable as water, thou shalt not excel; because thou wentest up to thy father’s bed; then defiledst thou [it]: he went up to my couch.’ Genesis 49:3-4. ‘Although the patriarch [Reuben] and his descendants failed to carry out the purposes of God, yet the name of Reuben will be immortalized, for throughout eternity, the countless millions of the redeemed will read that name on one of the pearly gates of the New Jerusalem. Twelve thousand of the one hundred and forty four thousand will be of this class, and will enter the kingdom of God under the name of Reuben. How can one be thus honoured who apparently made a failure of life? That is the great mystery of Godliness. How can the thief, who made a complete shipwreck of his life, be with the Saviour in Paradise? It is through the power of the blood of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. When Moses pronounced his parting blessing on the tribes of Israel, of Reuben he said: “Let Reuben live, and not die; and let not his men be few.” We might wonder how a character “unstable as water” could “live, and not die;” but the course pursued by Reuben at the time of a great crisis in Israel, explains how such a one can be an overcomer. {Cross and Its Shadow pg 291.4}.

Those who will not prepare to stand in the time of the coming crisis then like Samson will follow on to and choose to be ‘serpents’. For us to stand the time of trouble we are called ‘Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse [your] hands, [ye] sinners; and purify [your] hearts, [ye] double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and [your] joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up’ James 4:7-10.

Antitypical Samson
Considering the Instructions at their births ‘Important results were to be realized in the lives of Samson and John, which could not be reached without strict obedience to the laws of life and health. Hence, temperate habits were indispensable to them. The communications from Heaven were not given solely for those two marked characters, but were to be handed down through successive generations to our time.’ {HR, February 1, 1880 par. 18}.

‘The work of John was foretold by the prophet Malachi: “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord; and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers.” [Malachi 4:5, 6.] John the Baptist went forth in the spirit and power of Elijah, to prepare the way of the Lord, and to turn the people to the wisdom of the just. He was a representative of those living in the last days, to whom God has intrusted sacred truths to present before the people, to prepare the way for the second appearing of Christ. And the same principles of temperance which John practiced should be observed by those who in our day are to warn the world of the coming of the Son of man.’ {Christian Temperance and Bible Hygiene (1890) pg 39.1}

Those ‘living in the last days, to whom God has intrusted sacred truths’ have a choice to make of either being ‘sunlights’ or ‘serpents’.

‘Seventh-day Adventists have been chosen by God as a peculiar people, separate from the world. By the great cleaver of truth He has cut them out from the quarry of the world and brought them into connection with Himself. He has made them His representatives and has called them to be ambassadors for Him in the last work of salvation. The greatest wealth of truth ever entrusted to mortals, the most solemn and fearful warnings ever sent by God to man, have been committed to them to be given to the world.’–7T 138 (1902).

Seventh-day Adventists have been intrusted with sacred truths to be ‘sunlights’ like the name Samson but those that will follow the into the errors of Samsons evil character by being ‘double minded’ will become ‘serpents’ and be spewed out. These are those who will lightly regard the Health reform laws and the call not have to communion with the strange women [of paganism Catholicism and fallen Protestantism].

God is leading out a people. He has a chosen people, a church on the earth, whom He has made the depositaries of His law. He has committed to them sacred trust and eternal truth to be given to the world. He would reprove and correct them. The message to the Laodiceans is applicable to Seventh-day Adventists who have had great light and have not walked in the light. It is those who have made great profession, but have not kept in step with their Leader, that will be spewed out of His mouth unless they repent. The message to pronounce the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Babylon, and call the people of God out of her, does not come from any heavenly messenger, or any human agent inspired by the Spirit of God. {Volume 2 Selected Messages pg 66.2}

‘If ever there was a time in the history of Seventh-day Adventists when they should arise and shine, it is now. No voice should be restrained from proclaiming the third angel’s message. Let none, for fear of losing prestige with the world, obscure one ray of light coming from the Source of all light. It requires moral courage to do the work of God for these last days, but let us not be led by the spirit of human wisdom. The truth should be everything to us. Let those who want to make a name with the world go with the world. The great conflict is right at hand in which all will take sides; in it the whole Christian world will be involved. Daily, hourly, we must be actuated by the principles of the Word of God. Self must be sanctified by the principles of the righteousness, the mercy, and the love of God. At every point of uncertainty, pray and earnestly inquire: Is this the way of the Lord? With your Bibles before you, consult with God as to what He would have you do. Holy principles are revealed in the Word of God. The source of all true wisdom is found in the cross of Calvary.’ {Christ Triumphant pg 358.4}.

The Significance Of The “Firsts” And The “Lasts” Of Scripture.
‘It could be pointed out that in most books of the Bible there are definite and important connections between their commencements and their endings. These “firsts” and “lasts” are some of the”outcroppings” seen in the structure of the Scriptures. The first and the last books of the canon of Scripture stand together vitally related; they are like a golden clasp that binds in one book all the other books between. The first themes written in Genesis-because Jesus is “the first and the last”-foreshadow the last themes in the last book, Revelation. Things appearing in the first chapters of Genesis re-appear on a grander scale in the last chapters of Revelation.’ [The Certainty of the 3rd Angel’s Message Pg 100]

Samson a type of ‘Seventh day Adventism’ was to be ‘a sunlight’, ‘the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.’ Using the principle of first and lasts lets trace the first place in the scripture where the word ‘sun’ is used;

Its Genesis 15:12 ‘And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him’

The first place the word sun is used we read from the context that when ‘the sun’ goes down then there falls a ‘horror of great darkness’. If Adventism fails to live up to its foundations, pillars and landmarks they will impart ‘a horror of great darkness’ to the world rather than be ‘a sunlight’.

‘In like manner the Lord means that Seventh-day Adventists shall witness for Him. They are not to be hidden away from the world. They are to be in the world, but not of the world. They are to stand distinct from the world in their manner of dealing. They are to show that they have purity of character, that the world may see that the truth, which they conscientiously believe, makes them honest in their dealings; that those with whom they are connected may see that believers of truth are sanctified through the truth, and that the truth received and obeyed makes the receivers as sons and daughters of God, children of the heavenly King, members of the royal family, faithful, true, honest, and upright, in the small as well as the great acts of life. {Christ Triumphant pg 352.4}

The last mention of the word ‘sun’ is in;

Revelation 22:4, 5 ‘And they shall see his face; and his name [shall be] in their foreheads. And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.’

Unlike the first mention of the word ‘sun’ there was ‘its fall then darkness’, in the last place the word ‘sun’ appears in the bible, we encounter a light brighter than the sun, the ‘glory of God’. John testifies that glory that ‘there shall be no night there, neither the ‘light of the sun’ for God giveth them light’, in Revelation 21:23 he says ‘And the city had no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine in it: for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb [is] the light thereof.’

Christ is the ‘sun of righteousness’ ‘But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings’ Malachi 4:2.In the scriptures on several occasions Christ has been portrayed having a face shining as the sun See Mathew 17:2,Revelation 10;1.

Describing the light that shall lighten the sinless earth Prophet Isaiah says ‘And there shall be upon every high mountain, and upon every high hill, rivers [and] streams of waters in the day of the great slaughter, when the towers fall. Moreover the light of the moon shall be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days, in the day that the LORD bindeth up the breach of his people, and healeth the stroke of their wound.’ Isaiah 30:25-26.
The sun shall be sevenfold, as the light of seven days. Sevenfold light will lighten the new earth this is the light John represents as the glory of God ‘the light of heaven’.

‘Now the church is militant. Now we are confronted with a world in darkness, almost wholly given over to idolatry. . . . But the day is coming when the battle will have been fought, the victory won. The will of God is to be done on earth as it is done in heaven. . . . All will be a happy, united family, clothed with the garments of praise and thanksgiving –the robe of Christ’s righteousness. All nature, in its surpassing loveliness, will offer to God a tribute of praise and adoration. The world will be bathed in the light of heaven. The light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be sevenfold greater than it is now. The years will move on in gladness. Over the scene the morning stars will sing together, and the sons of God will shout for joy, while God and Christ will unite in proclaiming, “There shall be no more sin, neither shall there be any more death.” {Child Guidance pg 568.1}

At the first mention we find the ‘sun’ and ‘darkness’ but at the last mention we find the ‘sun’ and ‘light brighter than the sun’. See 1 Corinthians 15:41 ‘[There is] one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for [one] star differeth from [another] star in glory’. Just as Jesus ‘ The morning star’ shines above all stars. See 1 Corinthians 15:42 ‘So also [is] the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption:’ Those who in this earth will be ‘sunlights’ amidst the darkness by having the ‘gifts and manifestations of the Spirit’ and not dim into darkness shall grow from glory to glory unto the full stature of Christ and enter into the glory of incorruption ,which is compared to a ‘sun sevenfold’ .See Ephesians 4:11-13 ‘And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:’ .‘We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:.. ‘But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, [even] as by the Spirit of the Lord’. 2 Peter1:19,2 Corinthians 3:18.

‘All blemishes and deformities are left in the grave. Restored to the tree of life in the long-lost Eden, the redeemed will “grow up” (Malachi 4:2) to the full stature of the race in its primeval glory. The last lingering traces of the curse of sin will be removed, and Christ’s faithful ones will appear in “the beauty of the Lord our God,” in mind and soul and body reflecting the perfect image of their Lord. Oh, wonderful redemption! long talked of, long hoped for, contemplated with eager anticipation, but never fully understood’. {Great Controversy pg 644.3} .

This is the ‘grow up’ into Glory that Samson was putting at stake when he followed after the heathen women. He dint follow on to understand the more sure word of prophecy which had warned that as one from the tribe of Dan if he neglected God he would be ‘a serpent’ ‘an adder’. This is the ‘grow up’ we put at stake when we ignore the light of prophecy and follow after mystical apocalyptic women, the three fold union of the devil, paganism Catholicism and fallen Protestantism.

Them that love him [be] as the sun
So let all thine enemies perish, O LORD: but [let] them that love him [be] as the sun when he goeth forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years. Judges 5:31
Them that love the Lord are to be like the sun when it shineth forth in its strength.
‘Only as they were united with Christ could the disciples hope to have the accompanying power of the Holy Spirit and the co-operation of angels of heaven. With the help of these divine agencies they would present before the world a united front and would be victorious in the conflict they were compelled to wage unceasingly against the powers of darkness. As they should continue to labor unitedly, heavenly messengers would go before them, opening the way; hearts would be prepared for the reception of truth, and many would be won to Christ. So long as they remained united, the church would go forth “fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.” Song of Solomon 6:10. Nothing could withstand her onward progress. The church would advance from victory to victory, gloriously fulfilling her divine mission of proclaiming the gospel to the world.’ {Acts of the Apostles pg 90.2}

Be as the sun is a call to canvassing work ,‘When church members realize the importance of the circulation of our literature, they will devote more time to this work. Papers, tracts, and books will be placed in the homes of the people, to preach the gospel in their several lines. . . . The church must give her attention to the canvassing work. This is one way in which she is to shine in the world. Then will she go forth “fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.”–Manuscript 113, 1901. {Colporteur Ministry pg 7.2}

‘Those who are living upon the earth when the intercession of Christ shall cease in the sanctuary above, are to stand in the sight of a holy God without a mediator. Their robes must be spotless, their characters must be purified from sin by the blood of sprinkling. Through the grace of God and their own diligent effort, they must be conquerors in the battle with evil. While the investigative Judgment is going forward in Heaven, while the sins of penitent believers are being removed from the sanctuary, there is to be a special work of purification, of putting away of sin, among God’s people upon earth. This work is more clearly presented in the messages of Revelation 14. When this work shall have been accomplished, the followers of Christ will be ready for his appearing. “Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years.” [Malachi 3:4.] Then the church which our Lord at his coming is to receive to himself will be “a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing.” [Ephesians 5:27.] Then she will look forth “as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners.” [Song of Solomon 6:10.]’ {Great Controvecy 1888 pg 425.2}.

An adder in the path
Dan shall be a serpent by the way, an adder in the path, that biteth the horse heels, so that his rider shall fall backward. Genesis 49:17

‘The church of Christ should be a school in which the inexperienced youth should be educated to control their appetites, from a moral and religious standpoint. They should there be taught how unsafe it is to tamper with temptation, to dally with sin; that there is no such thing as being a moderate and temperate drinker; that the path of the tippler is ever downward. They should be exhorted to “look not thou upon the wine when it is red,” which “at the last biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.”–Signs of the Times, Aug. 29, 1878. {Te 165.1}

When we like Samson dally with sin at last it stingeth like an adder. The poison of an adder makes us adders, forms us into the character of the devil ,that old serpent, and we will not understand the speech of God .See John 8:43-44 ‘Why do ye not understand my speech? [even] because ye cannot hear my word.Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it’. Those dally with the Babylonian wine will not understand the speech of God ,his doctrine ,and thus will not experience the latter rain. See Deutronomy 32:2 ‘My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:’ They will not understand the speech of God because they stop their ears. See Psalm 58:2-4 ‘Yea, in heart ye work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth. The wicked are estranged from the womb: they go astray as soon as they be born, speaking lies. Their poison [is] like the poison of a serpent: [they are] like the deaf adder [that] stoppeth her ear;’.Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

‘Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.’ ‘Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.’ Proverbs 23:31,33.

‘For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Therefore let us not sleep, as [do] others; but let us watch and be sober.For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that be drunken are drunken in the night.But let us, who are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ’ 1 Thessalonians5:3-9

Samson drank the wine of ‘adders’ formed the image of the children of darkness, slept on their laps and sudden destructions came unto him .If we don’t watch and be sober then the decree of mischief [Sunday law] will come upon us unawares and the second coming of Christ will overtake us.

‘Christianity ought to have a controlling influence upon the marriage relation, but it is too often the case that the motives which lead to this union are not in keeping with Christian principles. Satan is constantly seeking to strengthen his power over the people of God by inducing them to enter into alliance with his subjects; and in order to accomplish this he endeavors to arouse unsanctified passions in the heart. . At his marriage feast Samson was brought into familiar association with those who hated the God of Israel. Whoever voluntarily enters into such relations will feel it necessary to conform, to some degree, to the habits and customs of his companions. The time thus spent is worse than wasted. Thoughts are entertained and words are spoken, that tend to break down the strongholds of principle, and to weaken the citadel of the soul. {Conflict and Courage pg 131.5}

As ‘Samson was brought into familiar association’ with evil and weakened the citadel of the soul, so will those who will tarry at Babylon’s wine cup of abominations, weaken the citadel of the soul and in the end they will speak perverse things and lustfully behold apocalyptic strange women . Note ‘For the lips of a strange woman drop [as] an honeycomb, and her mouth [is] smoother than oil: But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a twoedged sword’ Provebs 5:3-4. We have been called we ‘ may be blameless and harmless, the sons of God, without rebuke, in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world;’ Philippians 2:15.
Samson failed to ‘shine as lights’ and became perverse.We are also warned;
‘Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified.’ Acts 20:30-32.

In the time of wheat harvest
Judges 15:1 But it came to pass within a while after, in the time of wheat harvest, that Samson visited his wife with a kid; and he said, I will go in to my wife into the chamber. But her father would not suffer him to go in.

There were the Springtime Annual Feasts connected with the harvest in the land of Israel,
‘The Passover was celebrated in the early springtime, when the opening buds and flowers proclaimed that winter was past {Cross and Its Shadow pg 93.2}. The Feast of Unleavened Bread began with the fifteenth day of the month Abib, or Nisan, and continued seven days. Unleavened bread was eaten with the Passover lamb; but the Feast of Unleavened Bread followed the Passover, although at times the term “Feast of Unleavened Bread” also included the Passover {Cross and Its Shadow pg 103.1} .When the waving fields of golden grain proclaimed that the time of harvest had come, the service of offering the first-fruits before the Lord was performed in the temple. {Cross and Its Shadow pg 108.1}. PENTECOST, so called because it was held fifty days after the waving of first-fruits, 1 it was the last of the annual feasts held in the first half of the year. 2 This feast was called the Feast of Weeks, on account of seven weeks intervening between it and the Passover feast. 4 It was also called the Feast of Harvest, as it came at the close of the harvest. The Feast of Weeks was one of the three principal annual feasts, when all the men of Israel were required to appear before the Lord in Jerusalem {Cross and Its Shadow pg 116.1}.

“The whole Jewish economy is a compacted prophecy of the gospel,” and every service commanded by God in the Jewish economy was either a shadow of the service of our High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary, or of the service enjoined upon the earthly congregation for whom he is officiating. [Stephen Haskell in the cross and cross and its shadow]

But note that Samson instead of understanding the prophecies and being ‘a sunlight’ in the land of philistines and teach them of these feasts that pointed to Christ, he burns the harvest.See Judges 15:4‘And Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took firebrands, and turned tail to tail, and put a firebrand in the midst between two tails. And when he had set the brands on fire, he let [them] go into the standing corn of the Philistines, and burnt up both the shocks, and also the standing corn, with the vineyards [and] olives’.

Those in Seventh- day Adventism who will neglect prophecies and choose to drink form the ecumenical cups of the antitypical women of Timnath will end up burning all the opportunities of leading them to Christ.

‘God is raising up a class to give the loud cry of the third angel’s message. . . . It is Satan’s object now to get up new theories to divert the mind from the true work and genuine message for this time. He stirs up minds to give false interpretation of Scripture, a spurious loud cry, that the real message may not have its effect when it does come. This is one of the greatest evidences that the loud cry will soon be heard and the earth will be lightened with the glory of God.–Letter 20, 1884.’ { Vol 3 Selected Messages pg 410.1}.

Every prudent [man] dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open [his] folly. Provebs 13:16.Samson failed to deal with Knowledge and laid open his folly thus a fool, he shewed himself a fool at the time of the harvest. This is the behavior of foolish virgins the unwise class of virgins in Mathew 25.Thus Samson the foolish virgin.it can be well said of him.

‘The oil of grace gives to men the courage, and supplies to them the motives, for doing every day the work that God appoints to them. The five foolish virgins had lamps (this means a knowledge of Scripture truth), but they had not the grace of Christ. Day by day they went through a round of ceremonies and external duties, but their service was lifeless, devoid of the righteousness of Christ. The Sun of Righteousness did not shine in their hearts and minds, and they had not the love of the truth which conforms to the life and character, the image and superscription, of Christ. The oil of grace was not mingled with their endeavors. Their religion was a dry husk without the true kernel. They held fast to forms of doctrines, but they were deceived in their Christian life, full of self-righteousness, and failing to learn lessons in the school of Christ, which, if practiced, would have made them wise unto salvation.– Review and Herald, March 27, 1894.

Of Samson its written ‘Then his father and his mother said unto him, [Is there] never a woman among the daughters of thy brethren, or among all my people, that thou goest to take a wife of the uncircumcised Philistines? And Samson said unto his father, Get her for me; for she pleaseth me well’ Judges 14:3. See Provebs 12:15 ‘ The way of a fool [is] right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel [is] wise’. Of Samson it’s ‘As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool’. Provebs 26:1.

A sun and shield
Psalm 84:11 For the LORD God [is] a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good [thing] will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

It was required of Samson to accept the Lord the ‘sun of righteousness’ and form the image of God and in the end he would be as a sun and shield against the philistines. See John 14:12 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also;’ Samson was to have the whole armor of God in which ‘Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.’ Ephesians 6:16.But because he denied with adders, became a deaf adder. ‘So then faith [cometh] by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.’ Romans 10:17.Samson failed to have faith for he lived to fulfill the latter character of the tribe of Dan, deaf adder, and wouldn’t hear the word of God.

‘God’s promise that through Samson He would “begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines” was fulfilled; but how dark and terrible the record of that life which might have been a praise to God and a glory to the nation! Had Samson been true to his divine calling, the purpose of God could have been accomplished in his honor and exaltation. But he yielded to temptation and proved untrue to his trust, and his mission was fulfilled in defeat, bondage, and death. Physically, Samson was the strongest man upon the earth; but in self-control, integrity, and firmness, he was one of the weakest of men. Many mistake strong passions for a strong character,but the truth is that he who is mastered by his passions is a weak man. The real greatness of the man is measured by the power of the feelings that he controls, not by those that control him.God’s providential care had been over Samson, that he might be prepared to accomplish the work which he was called to do. At the very outset of life he was surrounded with favorable conditions for physical strength, intellectual vigor, and moral purity. But under the influence of wicked associates he let go that hold upon God which is man’s only safeguard, and he was swept away by the tide of evil. Those who in the way of duty are brought into trial may be sure that God will preserve them; but if men willfully place themselves under the power of temptation, they will fall, sooner or later. {Patriarchs and Prophets pg 568.1}

‘Those who say, Lord, Lord, and outwardly appear to rejoice in the Saviour, while they do not the works of Christ, are not what they appear to be, and unless they are truly converted, will be numbered with the foolish virgins. “This is the love of God, that we keep his commandments.” “He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” The Lord will not save men in disobedience. His perfection of character binds him to deal justly, and the penalty will certainly fall upon all who are found guilty of the transgression of the law in thought, word, or action.’ Review and Herald March 27, 1894.
